Method of bush hogging

I would never mow counter clock wise. You keep cutting the same grass over and over. I cut clockwise untill the turn is too tight then go long and turn in the cut grass and continue into the uncut grass. I think you are better off moving forward then clutching and reversing. Better timewise and on the equipment. But I only have a couple thousand hours of training...

I guess that depends on the cutter and what direction the blades turn and how it is set-up..

Cutters that curn CCW and have long skirts on the sides, it is actually better mowing CcW in my experience. Because a CCW mower, if viewed from the TOP down, the BACK side of the bushhog the blade is going to the right. That slings all the clippings out the back and to the right. CW and you are blowing clippings toward UN-cut grass. So mowing with grass on the left and flinging cuttings to the right is CCW

My 306 has a removable side on the left side however. With it removed, (or cutters with short side skirts), the bulk of the clippings get flung out the left. Therefore IF mowing CCW, you are blowing clippings toward uncut grass. So CW is better. With the grass on my right and clippings being blown to the left.

Point of this post: Simple, watch your cutter. See which side if flings most of the clippings to. And cut going the direction that makes it expel clippings into the already cut area, and not toward the uncut area.

 My clocks must go the other way. [:confused2:]
...I spiral with the grass on my left, because the bushog flings cuttings to the right. ... NO, the other other right.

Your right, I had it backwards:confused2: I will fix it

Good catch. I actually STARTED typing it right, and then I
though about it, got confused, and then changed it. I guess I shouldnt have though about it that long:confused2:

Oh, thank you! You had me wondering if I was getting older faster than I thought I was!

Either way, my last point remains the same.

Once around the fence line clockwise then counter clockwise for the rest. I don't worry about the corners too much, just turn and keep on going. A final "X" cut corner to corner picks up any leftover grass missed on the turns.

Right you are. I guess It is just second nature. I have used MANY different bushhogs over the years. I guess I never really pay attention to what way they spin and what way I go. I just start mowing and see which way it flings the grass. And mow so the grass isnt being flung onto where my next pass will be. Its actuall hard to sit down and try to visualize whats going on, and then try to type it:confused2:
