Method of bush hogging

   / Method of bush hogging #21
Right you are. I guess It is just second nature. I have used MANY different bushhogs over the years. I guess I never really pay attention to what way they spin and what way I go. I just start mowing and see which way it flings the grass. And mow so the grass isnt being flung onto where my next pass will be. Its actuall hard to sit down and try to visualize whats going on, and then try to type it:confused2:
When I was a kid my dad burnt off the sagebrush in our front field one morning. I watched. -- It was a typical hang out in bed morning for a teenager. Dad had a hard time getting it to go, but then it had lots of perimeter and began to approach the woods. When I finally saw the problem I ran out and started the tractor/bushog and did a quick CW circuit. The fire marshal arrived as I went around. Since there was nothing for him to do he was mad and fined Dad.

started typing, and thought ughs, hard to follow so made some diagrams.

myself prefer B diagram.

attempt to judge were center is, go out mow a few circles, and then just start mowing, on the larger portions of grass here, a never ending spiral it seems.

B diagram works better for me, if i am finishing mowing, and need to re cut grass a couple times due to grass got to tall. and by cutting in this long spiral it helps throw off any sort of straight lines. or areas were i had to do figure 8 turns in the middle, or U shapes, or long curved circles to mow the center down. and in that keeps the "wind rows" or bunched up mowed grass harder to see straight lines.

B diagram, after a few hours of mowing, either finish mowing or bush hogging, the less times i have to turn, the better. and B seems to do the trick for me. as in i am not hurting / worn out after wards, besides sitting on my rear.

===============

A diagram. i some times will do, and mow from the outside in.

C diagram. just forget it, by the time i try to judge center on one half and possibly not really able to tell center of other side. i end up getting (odd shapes or almost triangles) near the very end.

D diagram, i just plain refuse to do.

===============
i mow what ever direction sends the grass out away from the next path i will make.

================
if area is rectangle, then i will still most likely do B diagram. and mow from center out. but try to do a more "oval" spiral. and if i mis judge center or did not get the oval spiral just right, i will go over to C. and mow the far ends and corners that are left.

quote from.... Mowing Efficient mowing pattern? post 10

With a square field the spiral method might be best. The spiral doesn't work well on rectangle fields say 600 x 1500 or so. Because you leave a lot at each end to have to go back and do. rectangles are best done by the method described above by taking smaller sections that go the length ways of the field.

Another option for a square field is what I do. When you get to the end, instead of making the 270 degree turn, just to keep the corners square, make the 90 degree turn.Yea you will miss a little on the turn, but just turn back into whatever you mowing ASAP. The next time around will get whatever you missed. This puts the cutter back to work faster. You kinda get the idea by the pic.

call above E diagram / way of doing things. i will some times do this as well. or a modified A diagram. as i get near the center and corners begin getting sharper and sharper.
