Tractor
mf135
I would like to rebuild my mf135 tractor engine. It is the A3.152 motor. I see the liners are available in kit form with pistons ,rings etc. I spoke to two different dealers . One said you just push in a new liner and hone it. The other said this will never work and you need to press in a semi finished liner and then get it rebored to size. Obviously I would prefer not to incur machining costs but which answer is correct.
Also this tractor is far from me. I need to pack my pick up with tools. What specialized tools would I need for a rebuild?
Thanks Eugene

I have never rebuilt a 135, but have a ford nna. The liners were far from a slide in job and did need pressed in. My Dad had made a "press" out of threaded rod and some pieces for each end. With out the special tools it means taking the block to a machine shop to have them pressed in. If you have access to a lathe turn a disc out of 1" aluminum with a shallow grove that will fit the liner and a O.D. that is a tad smaller than the out side of the liner. Hole in middle and iron "washer" a tad smaller than the disc. Use a piece of iron pipe to pull the liner up into with a brace across the top. protect block with wood. use about 3/4 rod. Got to go if you need more info message me. Hope this helps, Ed.

well i have never redone a motor with sleeves my worry would be getting the old sleeves out ..or is the kit come with sleeves that drop in with the old sleeves left in ...if all you have to do is drop the sleeves in .. i would say go get some dry ice ..be careful gloves and pliers .... put something under the cylinder so the sleeves wont fall through ..put the sleeve in the dry ice .take it out and drop it in your cylinder it should take it in so it will drop to the bottom .....never done it but if i was doing it this would be the way i would do it ... good luck let me know how you made out and what way you did it

Ed I have a lathe and milling machine. This is what I was hoping to hear. If I made a type of puller. Maybe a slug that fits in the inner part of the liner and machined slightly smaller than the od of the liner. I could weld a heavy U piece inverted and as you say use 3/4 threaded rod.
I have read to remove the liner you can weld it but one guy reckons that is the most retarded backyard mechanic story he ever heard. I kinda thought it sounded good.
This tractor is 500 miles from me so I want to go up there well prepared.
These are the tools I think I will need. Please help me with my list.
1)spanners and screwdrivers all sorts.
2)high pressure cleaner,compressor,weldor oxy acetelyne
3)assortment bolts and nuts ( I assume this tractor is imperial so would use your awful imperial system:)
4) ring squeezer and valve removal tool and tork wrench.
5) feeler guage, mikes vernier and dti
6)chain block jacks and stands.
Anything obvious I left out?
I have heard of the dry ice story but I think I will battle to buy dry ice in africa.
I did post in the massey forum but had no answers so was feeling a bit rejected.
Does anyone know of a good write up of a tractor rebuild? Doesnt have to be a massey. Can be any diesel to give me ideas Thanks Eugene.

Is a 135 regarded as a vintage tractor? I was wondering if the 35 and 135 are the same except for the engine. I actually asked a question on the vintage site and the massey fergussen site.Hopefully I will get an answer

the 135 is a newer version of the 35 series with added features like power steering and 2 stage clutch.

With the puller I talked about the joy is you can leave the block in the tractor, and if the crank barrings are not to be replaced it works with the crank in place. When you make the pipe to pull the old liner into cut some small openings on the side, at the bottom, to see through. that way you can see when it starts to move, and you can also see that you don't have the pipe on top of the liner, the pipe should be only a little larger than the liner. If you can find a LONG open top ratchet that fits the nut on your rod it will help, ours was about 2 ft long and worked well. (the rod stuck up through the ratchet) The best "tool" you should carry with you is an old mechanic, even if he is retired and will only sit and talk he would be a big help. Ed
By the way welding leaves little balls and slag to deal with, not the best idea in an engine.
