MF 1532
More issues with the MF1532. I have never had a problem with the engine. It has never stalled or sputtered before. It ran fine a week ago, but yesterday when I went to start it, it would turn over, but would not fire. The only thing that I have done since it ran last is that I took the battery off of it to use to start my jeep, then put in back in the tractor. I don't think that has anything to do with it since I didn't hook it up wrong and it still cranks.

The fuel was getting low, so I thought that maybe, since it was sitting on a slight grade, it had sucked in some air, so I added fuel and bled the system (and cleaned the fuel filter). That didn't help.

The manual said that there may be air in the high pressure injections lines and that you can loosen and try to start it. I did that and nothing came out.

I checked the fuses and all are good.

I've never worked on a diesel engine, but know the basics about how they work. It appears to me that there is an electric fuel pump that feeds a high pressure injector. My guess it that the electric fuel pump died. Any thoughts?

on a side note, my manual does't match my tractor. the fuse box is not the same, and the screws that they identified as bleed screws are actually mounting bolts. (but i believe that i did eventually find the correct bleed screws)

thanks

More of a green tractor guy but I do have MF 399. Had similar problems twice with it. 1st was clogged filters that the dealer had supposedly changed. 2nd was a cracked bowl at the bottom of the filter, drained fuel and sucked air. Both times I bleed the system then had to crank it a little longer despite using the hand primer. But did run fine afterwards. Have you checked the filters?

I believe that it only has 1 filter. I took it out and cleaned it. It seems odd to me that a filter would suddenly clog completely. My experience with gas engines is that clogged filters show signs before clogging completely. Also when I bled the lines, i did get fuel beyond the filter. And the bowl looked fine, there were no cracks in it.

thanks

When I did let my bobcat run out of fuel(let me emphasize you only need to do that once) I cracked the line at the injectors to get the air out. BTW my filters on the 399 are side by side. As far as manuals ,John Deere has some its on line. Thought I saw a thread somewhere here , Massey does as well.

If you have fuel coming out of the filter, the machine should start within 15-20 seconeds of cranking. The compacts start a lot easier than tha older perkins you have to bleed out. Don't crank it for more than 20 seconds without letting the starer cool off. If the fuel bowl doesn't stay full while cranking I would think a kinked feed line or an obsrtuction in the tank maybe. If it does you should check your fuel shut off. I haven't heard of issues with the shutoffs, but maybe yours went bad for some reason. Can you hear it snap when you turn the key on?

I called my dealer (& found out that they are no longer a dealer). I talked to him a little bit about the problem & it turns out there is an electric solenoid valve upstream of the high pressure pump. So I am guessing that is the culprit, but I haven't done anything to verify it yet. Hopefully I can get to it tomorrow.

Being a 1533 owner and TBN member i would suggest checking the seat switch and the cut off solenoid (can you hear it energize when preheating?) I only say these because I've read others having trouble with them. Good luck

The seat switch is still securely taped down so I know that isn't the problem. Also, I'm pretty sure that the engine won't even crank when any of the safety switches are tripped. I haven't checked to see if I can hear it or not. Hopefully I'll be able to look at it tomorrow.

Thanks
Shawn

ditto on seat switch. Ours acts up on occasion.

Nevermind!

Good luck with whatever it is, though.

a side note, I taped down the seat switch because when i was operating on a forward or side slope and i pushed in the clutch, it took too much weight off of the seat and the tractor would shut down. it was a little unnerving, so i just taped it down. :)

well, the mystery is solved. a squirrel/rat/critter chewed through a wire to one relay AND unplugged another relay. soldered it up & plugged it back in and fired right up. it was an easy fix, so i am not complaining, but it does seem odd that the plug relies on the terminals to hold it on.

Excellent. Feels good to figure it out and fix it yourself.

Glad you found the problem, the mice at our farm were chewing the wires on my 1532 so bad I can't leave the tractor at the farm anymore.

My 1529 did the same thing. You can remove the solenoid and it will fire if this is the problem. On mine it was. Called the dealer and told em it would not crank, just turn over. He told me to remove the solenoid and crank it. It fired and ran smooth. To turn the tractor back off, you must stall it. Got the part the next day. It was under warranty.
