It definitely sounds like “stacked gears”. I know it’s on a MF, but On older international and farmall tractors they were bad about doing it so one of the people you know might be able to show you better than I can explain. If it’s not that, I would look at the parts break down for bearings that locked up or shafts that could have separated between the clutch and transmission gears since the back wheels will turn with it off the ground and you should pull it backwards with a truck. If it was a rear end problem you shouldn’t be able to spin the wheels or tow the tractor

Hi Tom. Welcome to the forum! :tractor: :welcome:

I'm going to move this thread over to our Massey section.

I have opened the hydraulic port and can see things shifting and all slots line up. When in neutral I can stick a screwdriver down there and all those gears spin easy and free. Is any of that related to what you are referring to? And what does removing top cover involve. I see about 4 bolts but it looks like there are probably more behind some other stuff I'll have to take off. This is my first tractor and I'm in the dark here but very willing to be enlightened.

Well it sounds like you have verified that the gears are free so I think that would eliminate what I was thinking.

Nothing hooked to PTO, and PTO works fine. Thank you everyone for your input. Sorry I can't get here often. I'm on a job that's taking all my time and energy. I won't be able to begin work on tractor until this job is over, maybe in two weeks. Trying to get a head start on finding out what's wrong with my MF 245. If I'm going to tear into this thing I want to go in at the right place.

You might still be right. someone told me that just because I can shift through all the gears doesn't mean I really am, it may just feel like it. His first thought was the same as yours - stuck in two gears. Planning to remove tranny cover when I get time.

If it was stuck in two gears you wouldn't be able to move the tractor as the transmission would then be locked up. Do you have the multi power transmission? 12 speeds forward and four reverse. 8 speeds forward and 2 reverse is the regular transmission

No, mine is a 3 speed and reverse, with high and low, so I guess that is 6 speeds forward 2 reverse. Tractor is locked only when you try to drive it. It will roll if you hold the clutch in, or if you jack the rear end off the ground the wheels will turn.

I've read through the thread several times and I'm scratching my head too. I have an I&T service manual pdf and I looked through it, I looked through the parts manuals online (AGCO Parts Books) and I can't picture anything that would lead to the symptoms you describe.

To review: It won't move in any gear forward or reverse under power. Trying this starts to stall the engine. The motor will idle clutch out in neutral. If you hold the clutch in the tractor can be towed in reverse. Forward we don't know.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that it's something in the planetary gear set but honestly I don't know. I'd love to have a peek at it though. I just live a bit too far away.

One correction to your review: you said "motor will idle clutch out in neutral", actually even in neutral letting clutch out will kill motor as it behaves like it's trying to engaged a gear but stuck solid.
