I also like the ultrasonic ones but as noted on the packages, over time mice will become immune to it.

I use the old fashioned but very effective mouse trap. Boy those little guys are just suckers for peanut butter. Once in the past I no sooner emptied a trap, reset it and walked away when I heard it snap on another critter. So, yes it's old fashioned but it does work. Also, I get to walk my trap lines twice a day! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've had pretty good luck with peanut butter for bait, but I've had the best luck with a small piece of bacon tied on with thread. I once caught 5 in one day in my office at work with me in the office at the time.

Peanut Butter also works the best as bait for me.

You could always put some barbeque sauce on them and serve them as appetizers.

We once rented a fishing cabin that was crawling with mice. A former tenant had sketched a mouse trap concept on the wall that we decided to try. It worked well and, with some modification, it can be made into a "repeater".

Put a half full of water 5 gallon bucket on the floor next to a countertop or table that the mice use. Find a stick like a paint stirring stick about 8 inches long with peanut butter on the end. Balance the stick (lengthwise) over the edge of the countertop so the peanut butter is over the bucket. Mouse smells peanut butter, runs out on "plank", mouse and plank fall into water. Mouse can't get up the side. Pick a plank that can't be used as a raft or ladder.

I made the repeater model at home. Make the plank hinge down with a counterweight to keep it horizontal till the mouse goes out. After the mouse falls off, the plank returns horizontal with the peanut butter still there for the next one. Should be good for half a bucket of mice!

I also found a modified "old style" trap that was made out of plastic and had a guillatine type hammer on it. Its not as brutal as it sounds, I think I found that at the local hardware store as well. Just got tired of emtying it. Peanutbutter is my choice as well.

Be carefull of the mouse droppings. They can cause an illness ?? can't rember the name that can be very serious.

Your location would preclude a cat staying out all winter. It will get it's ears frozen off in cold weather or even worse.

Hantavirus if I remember correctly, had two case in this area last year with one fatality. Folks going in to clean out cabins before hunting season and stirring up the scat.
I have found dead ones in old stone jars in the spring, the fell in and couldn't climb the glazed walls to get out. They were just mummified and easily disposed of. I may try the bucket trick with one of those but skip the water to avoid the stink.
