I use those felt cylinders that you attach to the wire before the feed rolls to clean the wire before it enters the whip. They are cheap and do a great job especially on hard wire with the copper coating. Cost less than a hammer.

A piece of paper towel clamped on with a clothespin works pretty well to keep the wire clean. I havent tried the felt, but that might work better than the paper towel.

A lot of people use an ear plug, and a cloths pin on the wire.
I would never use the felt ones with lube on it. Self shielded wire has a graphite lube on it, along with the serrated drive rolls what a mess to deal with! :thumbdown:
