OK, this is what's next. I am building a Mini-Me 8N for my wife. I am starting with a old Power Pup DIY from plans in August 1961 Science & Mechanics I am taking out the 12 -14 HP Craftsman engine rope pull (boy does that thing kick, too old for that, need electric start), replacing it with Honda 23 HP (Father's Day gift from my wife and dog), adding an Awesome Henry 8N garden Tractor kit and 7.00 x 16 Ag tires on Ford 16" 5 x 5-1/2" rims. It has an I-Beam frame, Model A Trannie and Model A nNarrowed rear end.

Currently:

Goal is sort of like this:

Problem - Model A Rearend - sometimes when I back it up, rear axle locks up. I roll it forward a few times and it frees up. What should I be looking for?

This is a complete shot in the dark as I know exactly zip about Model A rearends, but it sounds like a worn bearing/bushing is allowing the pinion to move and it's locking against the ring gear. I'd look closely at the input shaft and pinion gear.

Thanks, I will try to learn about that.

How do you plan to do the sheet metal? Or are you going to get a kit

Anyone recognize these parts? I need new brake shoes for it but no clue of what I have or where to get brake shoes for it.
Maybe I can have them relined?
This is the brake on the home built tractor. It is right behind the Model A Trannie and right before the model A rear axle.
It seems like it could have been some type of parking or emergency brake?

Looks like an ordinary drum brake used as a driveshaft brake. Fairly common back in the day.

Yes, you should be able to have the shoes relined and may want to have the drum turned on a brake lathe to clean it up.

Also looks like it's got a little grease or tranny lube in it, I'd check the seals to make sure the transmission isn't leaking into the brake.
