Looks like an ordinary drum brake used as a driveshaft brake. Fairly common back in the day.

Yes, you should be able to have the shoes relined and may want to have the drum turned on a brake lathe to clean it up.

Also looks like it's got a little grease or tranny lube in it, I'd check the seals to make sure the transmission isn't leaking into the brake.

OK, small progress. I got 3 rib tires for the front for the "8N" look. Here they are.


I got the engine out, and I found a place to send the brake shoes away to be relined because I couldn't figure out what they were for replacing. I've gotten a 23HP Honda V-Twin ready to paint Red and install. The Awesome Henry Mini 8N body kit is on order. Found some 16" x 7" Ag Lug tires that fit my 16" 5-1/2 x 5 Ford wheels. Almost everything is falling into place. Key word is almost.

Now, the bad news, the rear axle ring and pinion gears are toast, all chipped up. There was water in the gear lube, a mud colored mess for who knows how. My wife is saying that I should have paid anything for this old little tractor. Now I have to find the right gears used or new ($500 Expensive) or have someone build me another narrowed Model A rear end.

Can the ring and pinion be TIG welded up so they will work... My buddy repairs cast iron tig welding with 316L ....

Never knew a mini 8n existed. Saw your thread yesterday, then found this on Craigslist today.

Cool! These are one offs, never an official production run, just home builts. The Sears/Mini 8N looks well done but mine will be a serious tractor, Solid Bethlehem Steel I-Beam frame, Ford Model A steering, trannie and rear axle with a 23HP Honda V-Twin, probably will tip the scales at about 1,100 pounds. Should pull like a son of a gun. I got my Awesome Henry body kit and engine so I am just starting to put things back together.
