I also have an ancient Black & Decker Workmate that I cut and welded a stiffener to the bottom of a 14" x 20" sheet of 1/8" HRPO that I use for small stuff that I MIG. Weld spatter is an issue on that but a quick clean with a flap disc in my air grinder removes it. I use it for small stuff only and the stifferer on the bottom allows me to clamp it in the Workmate when I do require the big table. No fixturing holes so I use welding vise grips to secure things.
Note that HF sells their fixturing sets separately from their weld table and their weld tables can be ganged together to make any size table you require. I use their fixture sets and a set of Langmuir fixture clamps as well. One never has enough. My big table is lugged so I can earth ground it when I'm running high frequency pulsed TIG which is a required parameter for HF TIG.
I have a solid copper earthing rod in the shop, driven 4 feet into the soil with a Tweco style quick disconnect on it so I can cable it to the table when required.
Pulsed HF TIG has to be grounded through the table to the earth simply because of the stray current and besides, I don't want to get knocked on my butt either.
