Missing Message

Well, the only time you would have to refresh the page is if you went into a forum, viewed messages, then went back to the main index. Not when you first enter the site, that will be correct. It all has to do with what is is you're browser's cache (in english: temporary files stored by your browser).

It is just the nature of browsing, if you go back to a page that has updated and it was a 'cached hit' - you will have to refresh to view the updated page. The reason tha numbers would still be displaying as what they were when you first entered would be because you're accessing the 'cached' page.

I hope that isn't too confusing.

Nope, Muhammad, that's not confusing; I understand that part. That's the reason I don't use the "back" button, but instead, click on the "main index"; so, like I said, it ain't working right maybe 10 to 20% of the time.
