anyone ever put rear duals on their little mitsu?

or front duals and rear triples for that matter?

i want flotation for spring muck...

okay...just kiddin' on the front duals and rear triples...

but serious about rear duals!

actual setups, pics, how-ya-dun-its, etc...please!

guess I should consider some wider fenders huh?

I'd be concerned about whether the transmission case would handle duals.

I built spool adapters for a Yanmar YM2000. It wasn't very complex at all: Some large diameter tubing, a couple piece on each end cut to match the bolt patterns, and bolt it all together. It made the machine obnoxiously wide, and the tires were not exactly the same size; I used what I had: The tractor's original 9.5-24 and a pair of 8.3-24 tires on the outside. They worked pretty well, I guess. It definitely improved traction and floatation, but I have since taken them off and substituted 180 lb wheel weights.

On my machine, the tractor became too wide for its wheelbase, and was very twitchy and difficult to drive in a straight line. A stupidly long description about what I did and why is here: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/yanmar/195084-frivolously-productive-afternoon.html I used Schedule 80 pipe for the spools with 1/4" plate for the ends; if I were doing one for a larger tractor I might step up to 3/8" or 1/2", but I figured the end plates are rather thicker than the wheel centers, so I don't think they'll bend or break first.

That Yanmar was designed to be fitted with duals from the factory, so I wasn't worried about breaking anything. Overall, I can't really recommend doing it, but it definitely improves the traction and floatation. I just hated how it made the tractor handle, and took them off soon thereafter.

If the larger diameter wheels were inboard, it might make for a better combination.

90% of the time, the tractor would be running on the narrow track.

Your points about reluctance to run duals on a tractor not designed for it were well made and why I would not consider doing so on my Beaver. I've broken some of those bolts already, I don't consider risking more catastrophic damage a good idea. Particularly since the Beaver doesn't have any rollover protection.

Is the transmission case strength or bolt strength an "issue" on these tractors. Pardon the ignorance please. So far I consider my mitsu a robust little tractor.

284I...I'll check the thread out...hoping for pics...good point on width vs wb.

The bolts for certain. I've broken off more than 1. :D

Is the case designed to handle that additional stress? I don't know. I don't want to find out.

oh, I guess I'll just put this on the back burner for a while...until I have the time to figure it out. by then I'll probably have done so much work with singles I'll just can the whole idea.

I was thinking clamp on duals rather than bolt to the hub... :confused3:

cheers!

Techwrtr2, what exactly have you broken on your Satoh, and what is the failure mechanism? Is it breaking in normal usage?

I think AKFISH built dual for his tractor so he could operate in in soft dry sand. He would be the go to guy for this.

Case on thee things has quite a bit of aluminum in them. Guess it depends what you plan to do, for just general driving I wouldnt have any worries but if your driving thoguh uneven terrain where you loading hte outer tire, is that much longer of a lever arm on the tranny your putting the force through.

I'm not sure I'd consider a lot of our usage over the years as "normal". It's been a long time since I broke one of the bolts out back, I don't recall exactly how. I'm sure some of it was connected to removing the 3pt hitch parts and installing the saddle for our backhoe that contributed. I no longer do that since I have another tractor.

I've broken the frame up front a number of times but that was due to hard use/abuse more than anything. Ever since plating the areas and taking more care, I have broken nothing.
