Re:Mixing oil with diesel fuel-A disaster brewing?

Thanks for the advice but I wasn't "had". That's the reason I was asking the question, not to be 'had'.

I've never heard of anyone doing that except for large fleets. You can buy equipment that cleans the oil and mixs it with the fuel oil in the storage tank. The only benefit is disposing of the used oil. Unless you're using thousands of gals of fuel oil on a regular basis, it's not worth it.

FWIW, diesels will burn a wide variety of oils including cooking oil straight out of the bottle. At $5 a gal it's a bit expensive.

Think about the metal suspended in used oil.And moisture.Take yer used oil to walmart to dispose of it would be my advise.

I agree. I think keeping your fuel and oil as clean as possible is the best way to extend the life of an engine. The only time I ever added something to my fuel is when I accidentally pumped two gallons of gasoline into my tank. My mechanic had me add two quarts of transmission fluid and two quarts of engine oil to the tank and then fill it with fuel. I ran out that tank without any problems so I guess the oils counteracted the gas.

I think the whole concept here is to add back some of the lubrication for the top of the engine and the fuel pump that was lost when the sulfur was reduced. There are some real good products that will do just that without the risks stated above. Check out Redlineoil.com for a product called Plus 85. Works just as advertised. Mark

Thanks for useful info Mark. I knew there was some merit to what this guy was originally saying. Great to see there are products that will replace the effect of the lost sulfur without negative impact on the engine.

I've been adding a few ounces of marvel mystery oil to each tank I run. Finally got around to asking my neighbor who's a diesel mechanic what he thought of this, and his take was, can't hurt, but probably not worth the effort.
Sorry to revive the thread. Haven't been around much now that I've got two little ones and a move coming up.

Out in the large fleets it use to be common to add used motor oil to the diesel tank after filtering it. But with the coming of the used oil furnaces for the shops, its not as common. There are several manufactures of super oil filters that inject very small amounts of oil into the fuel system and use as a selling point that you never have to do oil changes, just add makeup oil. I personnally recycle my used oil, but I do add ATF with diesel fuel conditioner in my 89 F350, still with the orginial injector pump after 170,000 miles.

I remember asking a mechanic about Marvel Mystery Oil and he replied It's a mystery why anyone would use that stuff. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

That was many years ago, the last time I ever bought a can of it.
