ML112 FEL Mystery Question

Doug, sounds like you have the perfect opportunity to get even with some folks for dumping a load of loam in front of your drive a few weeks ago. Load the rock onto your trailer and drop it in front of the place the guys that blocked your drive work.

What about Doug's QA trouble? That is what my last cry for help was intended for.
I'll answer this for Jeremy! :)

"The Dougster are a dang mechanical engineer and should have figured this out for himself by now"! :D

And it is true. I have rebuilt both latching mechanisms... but the QA buckets still keep managing to break loose... mainly when there is upward pressure on the bucket relative to the tool carrier. I swear I cannot figure out why this is still happening... other than to chalk it up to small pins and a generally loose fit

By now, I should have taken and posted some new pictures of the bucket and tool carrier right before a typical drop. You can actually see the bucket pulling away from the pin landing and the top edge then slipping out. But how is this happening with the latching pins fully inserted and locked into position? I haven't a clue. :(

Oh man! Does Brother Keith want to see the Dougster in jail??? ;) This may be war between me and the town DPW... but remember that right or wrong, they always have the town cops on their side. :(

What happens is that the the pressure on the pins when back dragging actually causes them to roll over center and pop up just enough to unhook it. This is a minor design flaw that a) was corrected a few years ago and b) doesn't usually show up until you get to the 55+ HP range...

I recently found the KMW site, and there is a page of inside/production photos. None show the questioned holes in use, but once chained up to go into the washer & powdercoat line it sure looks like those are indeed the high spots where they'd be lifted from...

KMW Ltd - Company Profile

Dang, I wish I had more time to get in on these conversations before they're over! Having an unexpected downtime is nothing to wish for though - Stay outta trouble, Doug - you don't want to know how much the taxes are to be allowed back to taxpayer status!

Yes, another Dougster mystery question of the day!

I kinda hope Jeremy is around! :D But if not, does anyone else have any idea what these two 3/4" holes are for on the ML112 FEL's boom??? Believe it or not, I have a legitimate reason for asking... this is not just random contemplation of one's navel. :)

Please don't ask me what the winner gets. You all know the Dougster is broke! :p

Dougster: They put that hole there so that my remote connections bracket bolts right up!

It always happens backdragging... so I generally avoid backdragging as much as possible. The more recent drop problems (i.e., today's!) did not occur during backdragging... but rather while moving forward with the grapple on the ground, angled forward digging in but with the ground applying upward pressure on the grapple due to the upward curved front tangs.

I'm gonna apparently need more info about that design change so I can try to have it duplicated here before somebody gets hurt and not just embarrassed. Point me in the right direction Jeremy!!!

Yep... I guess so. Not the fascinating & interesting answer I was hoping for... but it sure frees up those holes for other creative uses! :)
