mmm reinstall

hi everyone, is there an easy way to line up the spline, on a mmm.bx24? thanks for any info.

I am not familiar with the BX24 but with the mmm that I have on the B7800, I lock in the front position bar first. Everything else aligns accordingly.

The best tip that I have received so far is to make sure the mid PTO shaft is free-wheeling. Position the PTO lever for rear only and allows the mid shaft to rotate very easy so that the the splines align a lot easier.

That's brilliant! Thanks. That's the only part that's a pain -- muscling the pto shaft to get the splines aligned while on your back on the garage floor.

Another way to get the pto aligned is to lock the mid pto in gear and to move the belt on the deck back and forth to rotate the deck driveshaft in small incremants to get the coupling to align. It woks well for me. Put some grease on the coupling also, slides on easier. I double check that the drive shaft locks to the pto, I'd hate to see the damage it could do if it came loose while mowing. Good luck.

You might find it easier to jack up the back end of the tractor a couple of inches.

One of the things that I find helpful is to not worry about pulling the locking collar back UNTIL it is on the shaft. It will slip onto the shaft a bit, THEN pull the collar back and slide it the rest of the way on.

It does get easier with repetition.

Yep, make DOUBLE EXTRA sure that it is locked. I use some lock ease (graphite spray) to keep everything nice and slippery without making it a dirt magnet. Mine came off at full mowing speed, tore my trans filter open, barfed up all of the fluid, and led to a HST failure. By the time it was all over it cost me $2000.

"make DOUBLE EXTRA sure that it is locked" I'll second that advice. It only cost me $250 to repair the damage mine did when it came off the spline. That hurt but I guess I got the bargain rate.

I've found that attaching from the tractor left is the easiest. I use my left hand to attach while I'm sitting on my rear next to the deck. After you do it a few times it gets better. I hate doing it, but it only takes me about 15 minutes to get it on now. Muscling the deck under the tractor is still the hardest part.

I'll agree with all of the above, particularly the point about making sure the drive shaft is secured. My dealer tells some real horror stories about what happens when a MMM shaft comes off at 2000 RPM. Not pretty.

Regarding muscling the deck under the tractor; has anyone tinkered with a safe way to drive a BX over the MMM without causing damage? I haven't tried it yet, but it is a tempting thought.

I found that this is the best tip. Trying to hold the collar back and sliding on at the same time becomes frustrating.

Also having one of those garden kneeler pads makes the work much more comfortable.

Why did my dealer specifically tell me to wire or tie-wrap the shaft together when removing the desk for the season? He seemed to think that it was real inportant the the shaft coupling not become separated. I haven't removed my deck yet so I don't understand the importance.

One spline on the drive shaft has a small spot of weld that only allows the halves to be put together one way. I assume the one way assembly is for balance. I thought the weld was intended to keep the halves from seperating and that the weld on mine was too small and it just pulled apart. Maybe they all do if there is sufficient pressure. If the halves seperate make sure you get them back together correctly. Better yet, don't let 'em come apart.

What I have done to make mmm rem/install easier is on concrete lower deck into 4 of the 3 wheeled dollies that are about 8" across and $4-5 bucks each at farm/lumberyard into the scalpe wheels. then disconnect use loader to lift front and pull/push either side out. Will have to try lubing pto connect to reattach hardest part of whole mess and you sure don't want it to come loose in use!! Have brotek skid plate on to minimize damage if it dewww.

Gator blades work great also (must make adapter to fit) on 60" MMM
