MMM removal

I finally took off my mmm last weekend. After looking at it, I'm not too concerned about it. I think Trescrows has it right about just brushing it off before installation. The part you wouldn't want to get the dirt on comes off with the mmm. That being the little ball bearings that keep the shaft attached. Unless I intend to somehow bury this thing up to its belly in mud, I don't think it's worth the hassle. I wonder if the rear PTO cover is there more for safety than cleanliness?

I have a MMM on my B7500 and there is a grease fitting on each end of the u-joint that slides onto the PTO shaft, and there should be grease placed on the PTO shaft too. Now, if you have a tractor or own a grease gun and you ain't getting any on you, you ain't doin' it correct. I can walk thru the automotive department at any chain store, drop my a tractor place and never touch a thing and walk out with grease somewhere on my hands or face. It's a law.

Upgw, there is a JD site that can be gotten to from the "other site" (the my JD is better than your Murray site) that will get you to Yahoo.com where there is apparently a club of sorts--I saw them (pics of the new JD GT's and pseudo subcompact) there. While I was not impressed compared to the BX, that is me, they could be just what a die-hard JD guy wants so take a look and see what ya think--you might like them!

Hey, I have been buried in mud and even some sewage (don't ask) and you have no reason to worry about your mid PTO shaft being exposed. The only thing that would worry me is you bottoming the tractor on a rock or log or stump and then bending the shaft in which case a plastic cover or even a sheet metal cover is not going to provide any protection. J

Our concern is that since there will be grease left on the shaft after the mmm is removed, it will be like rolling a caramel apple in a bunch of nuts. But I'm not so sure there needs to be grease so much on the pto shaft as a little bit in where the ball mechanism is on the end of the drive shaft. It just seems like it would be easier to come up with some sort of cover. Soon as I get a chance, I will measure down there and see if I can come up with something to use. Just a bit tough coming up with time around the holidays.

Upgw, try inquiring at the gardenweb.com site about the new 500 series but do not tell them I sent you as they will likely attempt to banish you (or worse), something I consider to be a Honor! How heavy and difficult is that B7500 MMM to handle?
I currently own a BX2200 w/ 60"MMM and plan to purchase a new B7500 w/60" MMM next week. However, I am worried about the heavier MMM on the B7500. I have found the BX 60" deck heavy enough to stand-up and turn over to clean the bottom. Do any of you B7500 owner's find the MMM hard to handle to perform cleaning?

I found a spec page out on the net for the RCK60-24b mmm. Unfortunately, I can't find one for the BX mmm. Check it out...348 whopping pounds and I sure felt every bit of it when I took it off the tractor.

It's heavy but ain't too bad. If you have a FEL you can use it to lift to clean the bottom or sharpen/change blades, or if no FEL is available you'll need help for getting to the bottom, and that help can be a person or come-a-long, chair hoist, etc.
