Upgw, there is a JD site that can be gotten to from the "other site" (the my JD is better than your Murray site) that will get you to Yahoo.com where there is apparently a club of sorts--I saw them (pics of the new JD GT's and pseudo subcompact) there. While I was not impressed compared to the BX, that is me, they could be just what a die-hard JD guy wants so take a look and see what ya think--you might like them!
Jeff, you are correct, the PTO cover on the rear PTO is for safety not cleanliness. Hey, I have been buried in mud and even some sewage (don't ask) and you have no reason to worry about your mid PTO shaft being exposed. The only thing that would worry me is you bottoming the tractor on a rock or log or stump and then bending the shaft in which case a plastic cover or even a sheet metal cover is not going to provide any protection.
