I agree. Just because JiffyLube advertises changing the oil every 3000 miles (to get your business more often) doesn't mean those are the rules. I, until very recently, have been using "regular" (not synthetic) oil in all of my vehicles and have been changing oil every 7500-10,000 miles. I've never had a problem with any car related to oil problems and I've kept most of my previous vehicles until they've rolled over 100,000 miles. I've still got my current Honda Civic running fine with 137,000 miles.

Gulf oil manufactured Sapphire Motor Oil and it came in 1 or 2 gallon square metal cans.

My favorite was the Wolf's Head Recycled oil. I wonder what they do with the used oil we take to the recycle points ? Sell it back to us as synthetic ?

My wifes 1996 Mercury mini van has gone 15-20,000 miles on several occasions between oil changes. We now have 142,000+ on it and have never had a problem; no drips, burning etc. It runs like the day we bought it. I use what ever oil (5W-30 & 10W-30) and filter that is on sale. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The new diesels can go much longer without oil changed due to how clean they run. Most of the newer diesels are now running as clean or cleaner than gas engines. The recommendation on my Ford diesel is 7500 miles under extreme conditions and 10,000 under normal conditions. The two oil changes I've done at 7500 the oil has tested well within specs and that's with harsh driving. If you're worried about it send an analysis in to Blackstone. For $12 bucks they'll tell you exactly how your oil is doing and if there is anything wrong with the oil or anything that is in there that shouldn't be.

Caterpillar Engine Company sells a pre-paid kit (mailer included) at about any truck dealer's parts counter. I paid $17.00 for my last one. You can't beat spectroscopic analysis when it comes to oil and it's contaminates. Regular spectra-analysis will alert you to impending trouble too. I "burn" a sample every 2 changes.

If I am not mistaken, (I could be wrong as I have been before), NAPA and Murrays also sell a pre-paid kit.

Whatever kit you use, just be sure to follow the instructions carefully for obtaining the oil sample. You don't want to introduce any foreign substances that didn't come from the crankcase into the sample bottle. The spectroscopic burn is pretty exacting. Small amounts of foreign substances will show right up.
