Another good assessment. I think, just think - not factual, studies can show causation but it just does not apply to everyone. A farmer friend of mine is his 80痴 is unsure of what to make of these cases. He notes of heavy exposure to Paraquat, which many believe to be far more toxic than glyphosate. According to him, his typical application in any of a few 100 acre fields was strong enough to see the effects each lap around the field. To date, he notes of no known issues because of using it - with a non-cab tractor. Albeit glyphosate is a different chemical, with a different manner of acting - especially mixed, thereby creating a compound. ???

I wish your farmer friend well. I as well have used Paraquat and numerous other pesticides far more topic than glyphosate. Non-cab tractors also.

This is just the modern version of witchcraft trials. Nobody has ever shown in vitro or in vivo chromosomal damage from glyphosate. With no mechanism, it's just magic and superstition.

It's used to kill the crop at a certain point of maturity so everything is ready to be swathed or combined at the same time. This mean the farmer doesn't have to worry about spots that are not quite ready and it allows the farmer to schedule harvest operations rather than rely on nature.

Are you familiar with dinitro-amine? I believe it was used on the prairies for cereal crops? In the mid 1960’s we used it for weed control on potato crops. Nasty stuff. The diluted product stained hands and spray equipment yellow. The tiniest whiff of it would cause coughing and gagging.

Totally approved for use by Ag Canada though and it was effective and cheap.

Ah, the good old days.

Round up is probably being scrutinized because of its popularity. Round up and glyphosate are like Kleenex and facial tissue. The general public is ignorant of all the rest of the nasty chemicals used to control weeds and pests.

Glyphosates are a first cousin to Agent Orange. I am a Vietnam Vet and suffer from long term effects of Agent Orange.

Adding to that there are more than a few farmers who have Non-Hodgkin lymphoma as a result of using glyphosates. I attending the funeral of my step daughter's father in law after use of glyphosates. He died of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

I'm a retired manufacturing engineer and now goat rancher and farmer.

When using glyphosates, use commonsense and wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Also minimize the use of it.

Agent Orange was mostly 2,4,5-T, and was not related to glyphosate at all.

Glyphosate may be safe. Glyphosate may be carcinogenic. There are convincing arguments and studies to support either point of view, I certainly don't have the answer, but here's what I see as the major problem. Let's say gly gets banned. Then what? Roundup ready corn, soybeans, and god knows what other crops are mainstays of world agriculture; remove gly and you're taking a step back to 40 acres and a mule. Right now those big farmers are coaxing 250 or 300 bushels of corn out of an acre where their grandfathers got 30 or 40 bushels from the same acre. Without some of their practices, which are definitely questionable, yields will plunge and the price of your Cheerios (and everything else) will skyrocket.
When or if glyphosate gets banned or restricted the chemists will have "a new, more effective, and safer" product ready to sell at high prices at least until the patent expires. Some farmers will get old school and go back to Atrazine and the like- you really don't want that stuff back again.

I don't have answers. Cars kill a lot more people than Roundup. DDT saved countless lives and is still used in some countries. Life is a series of compromises. Should I tell my daughter to forget about her M.B.A. and nice executive job and get out here and start hoeing? Totally organic farming is nice when we buy everything from our local farmer but I don't think anybody is exporting boatloads of organic grain anywhere as the production scale isn't there and may be impossible to achieve..

I do not want my daughter to hoe ever......

I'm not impressed (or surprised)...only the ignorant assume the unknown as factual...

Trying to think of a single case where there was controversy over whether something was harmful--smoking, DDT, thalidomide, agent orange, asbestos, coal dust, talcum powder, lead paint, radium--and in the end it turned out to be perfectly harmless.

BTW, thalidomide is back on the market. It turns out it only caused birth defects if the mother was B vitamin deficient, so they manufacture the pill in combination with B vitamins. Problem solved.

Try GMO crops. The Woo crowd is convinced they should be avoided, but we have been eating them for decades with no bad effect. They are completely harmless. And of course you know that one reefer will lead you into a life of sin and degradation.

We know exactly why all of the things you list are harmful. The mechanism has been studied and is well understood.
