More Pond, or How To Reduce Flooding

/ More Pond, or How To Reduce Flooding #31
rlee6, I have been told by a local contracter that they can deepen and clean up the pond with it full of water. They would prefer to drain it but I have a large population of turtles and some large fish in it so I do not see draining as an option.

A drag line excavator will work for making existing ponds deeper with out draining the water out. They are big and takes a good size truck to move them. What some of the guys do here in Michigan is they buy old ones for around $5000, put another $1000 into them to get them working, do their digging and sell it again for about what they have into the rig. Probably a little big for a small pond but if you want to do an acre or two they would probably work fine.

Thanks for the replies. I have yet to dig a pond to get fill dirt for the barn (shipping container), and a few other uses.

Don,
Thanks for the warnings. I didn't know I cannot drain to my own field. You and I are in the same water management district). Does your contractor work in Polk county, too, in the Lake Wales area, southeast Polk? I may want to give him a call.

I have a question. I know digging a pond and raising the ground level with the fill dirt will effectively lower water level. But, does digging a pond by itself have the effect of lowering water level at least locally?

About dragline excavator. If Don and BradK are willing to share the cost, I will consider it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I did some rough calculation. Dig 1 acre to 12' depth=enough dirt to raise 4 acres by 3'. That's lots of dirt. Very tempting. All at the cost of $1000 (not counting the cost of spreading it)? Very tempting.

BradK,
I know I don't need a permit to dig for fill dirt. At least in my neighborhood.

I probably was a little too obscure; you can drain to your own field; just don't let it flow to the highway swale or similar (or, at least don't let them see you doing it).

I think he does; I'll ask tomorrow. His name is Wade Barnhill; his company is Barnhill Construction in Okeechobee. He actually lives in Basinger, which is well on the way to Sebring. I'll get you a number when I talk to him.

As for the drag line, I'll be all done before you could find one and get it in use. Good idea, though. The drag lines I remember from when Port St. Lucie was being developed were the old mechanical ones with lots of pulleys, winches and cables. They have been pretty much replaced here in Florida with hydraulic excavators except for very large jobs, like the local shell rock pit. They are excellent for digging in water and digging a pretty good distance from the machine. They basically work by trowing the bucket out like an underhand cast, then dragging it back with the cables until it's full, then swinging and tipping the bucket to fill the transport or stockpile the spoil.

Tomorrow (Saturday) we're suspending digging for the weekend, but moving dirt. The dozer is here now, and Wade will be running it. He's going to show me how to run the loader and I'll be bucketing dirt that has been stockpiled while the truck was off for service.

Here's the progress on Doug & Amy's pond at the end of day three. The small excavator has really slowed progress; this should have been finished by now.

This shows how close we are to the existing pond. Basically, it's just the width of the excavator. The pile is what I'll be moving by loader tomorrow.

Today (Saturday) I got to run the loader. It's a big'n, a Case 916 articulated wheel loader, but it's as easy to operate as my TC18. It's hydrostatic (according to the owner), totally clutchless. It has 3 ranges, a forward/reverse lever, a throttle, and a push button on top of the loader joystick that will pop it down into low range when attacking a pile of dirt, then let it return to 2nd or 3rd range for traveling. Because of the articulated steering, it can actually turn tighter and manuever in a smaller space than my little tractor.

The first order of business was to complete the connection between the old and new pond. Angie, the excavtor operator, was kind enough to fill my bucket directly from her bucket. It's sort of romantic.

After several loads, we're almost through the "plug".
