Here's a picture of the same palm from the other side of the pond, from near where my front porch will be (it will be more to the left). The excavator is behind the suggested "island", standing in what will be water when the pond is completed. The pond will extend beyond the dirt pile.

Looking at the first picture, I would vote to keep the palm. After looking at the second picture, I have to say that you are right, the palm on the island will probably compete with the fountain for attention.

Don,

Looks great! Love all the pics and the details.

My vote is for the island. My reasoning is it adds one more point of interest to your place. It could easily be planted in flowering shrubs that wouldn need any maintenace since nobody goes they, the shrubs could just take over. It is also a safe haven for waterfowl. Migrating ducks, resident ducks, or if you get the urge, buy a few pet ducks, geese or swans. My goal is to have a few Ruens (sp) swimming around in my pond. Too many and you have a poop issue, but three would be just about right for me. And the final reason to keep it is the kids will love boating around it. I have a small 10 ft plastic boat that I take the kids boating in. We go around the island a few times and they have a blast.

Either way, it's gonna be quite the showpiece!!!

My vote is no island if you are ever tempted to put a small bridge out to it with a gazebo. I dont care for that look.

Otherwise, I really am not sure I am of an opinion on that issue. It would be a pain to maintian, but a good string trimmer would make quick work of it.

It's a matter of balance to me. Photos are tricky, they dont often show the whole "picture". That being said, stand back look at it and imagine the pond surrounding the tree from your main focal points. Is the tree going to be so isolated as to look out of place?
I get the feeling from the second photo that it would be anchored well from that backdrop. Which would lead me to keep it.

It would be pure whimsey ......as is this reply. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I vote 'for' the island so 'you' could vote any
less desirable inhabitant (like an alligator) off. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I say leave the island. That way you can do swamp buggy racing around it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Seriously, I think it would look kinda cool with the little island and tree. Though I can also understand the maintenance issue being a pain in the ....um.... neck.

Ask your wife. That's my vote. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Keep it! You can always take it out later if it comes to it, even tho it will be a bit of a pain at that point.....
How deep will the pond be between the island and the "shoreline" of the pond? Seems like you could just kick off your shoes and walk over there if you wanted too...........

A little update. It's been 2 weeks since I posted any progress, because it's been boring. Moving dirt. Moving some more dirt. Moving yet more dirt.

As a reminder, this is what the pile looked like after moving about 20 yards from it.
