My chains are toast. They are paper thin and I am just trying to nurse them until spring when Tire Chains go on sale. As for tightenss, I have never really tightened mine that much. We are pretty clay up here, so very slippery. A few of the loggers told me to run my chains loose as having them tight only helps when you are going fast. They said this would help throw mud if they are loose. Dunno...

Hmmm. I have nothing but clay. I run my chains tight, and FWIW they don’t seem to clog. I am using Ken’s diamond chains.

That said, I don’t go out on slopes during the winter as the clay soil here has no integrity and everything slides. The tractor, the cows, me.

Also having them loose makes them way easier to get them on. I had my annual reminder of that fact last night when I chained up (mine are tight), thinking that maybe I would have to plow this morning. Not yet, but it is still snowing.

In the summer I was cutting brush and watching for rocks at the mower, didn't realize the size of one that high centered the machine. Thank God the underside has no fragile parts like most tractors.

I've done that on a few logs. I usually just push down on the implement and back off. Only once in 19 years did I get stuck when I dropped it off a hidden log on a hillside that had built up soil on the top side. It was just like a high step. Didn't have enough down travel to push myself off. Had to make the hike of shame and get a chainsaw. :laughing:

That's one of the best things about a Power Trac, the smooth steel plate underside. I was using my Antonio Carraro in high ferns and ended up with a rock under the engine oil pan. I went and got the 310 John Deere and lifted it off, didn't want to risk further damage. Now I aim the tires for the rocks, makes for a lousy ride.

My land is like a quarry blast site with some topsoil mix in. If you dig out a rock, there will be 2 more under it.

M5040 you need to experience tree wrap then you are a true pt owner. I did one that somehow got me around a 14 inch alder that was so bad I had the tree jammed between the engine cover and the rops. Had to start cutting the tree down by standing on the roof.

It is amazing how much snow plowing you can do sometimes before you realize you did not engage the hydraulic quick attach tabs. I actually tore a plow hose one of the times I did that. Makes up for my not having done Moss' airline pass through hole nor the fence. I can check the other boxes. I am sure there are plenty of other boxes I can check but they are just not coming to mind at the moment.
