Just heard the weatherman say were looking at 4-8" or more late Monday into Tuesday. Better get more fuel and try like hell to relax the face before then. All that seat time sure does make the face ache due to the fact I usually have a grin from ear to ear.

Frank:

It's snowing here this morning. We are getting it again and from the looks of the weather map, so are you. Got to go drive my big truck and try to aviod the 4 wheelers. It will be dodge-em on I-75 this morning.

I like the sled picture. That's an older Arctic Cat, looks like a 700 efi sled. I think you'd have to have pretty high speed to get a picture of the Thundercat. It's usually going about 110 on hard pack like that road.

Ron:

I-75 was slicker than cat poop on a linoleum floor this morning. As usual, the typical Michigan drivers were out in the hammer lane running 75+. We all chuckle when we see them out in the "pucker bushes" up the road a little farther.

I especially get a charge out of the SUV drivers. It's apparent they feel that 4wd is going to get them there faster. Problem is, on ice, they go in the ditch just as easily and they roll easier too. I always see at least one playing turtle.

I had some girl pass me about the 21 mile marker. She whipped over to get off on M-85, proceeded to do a couple of 360's and wound up going backward. She looked me right in the eye as she slid off into the guardrail backward. I just smiled and thought...another one for the bump shop. She actually picked up speed going backward. Saved her from me running her over. My 121,000 gross would have sent her to the promised land and ruined my day too. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I hope you don't fall into the catergory of "typical Michigan driver"

I get a kick of the term "accident" on the news. It's not an "accident", it's stupidity. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I’ am a typical Michigan driver. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

But not the type you discribe. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I drive over 40,000 miles each year and manage to keep it between the lines. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I get to see my share of Stupid drivers including truck drivers. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Good thing there are more good drivers than bad. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ron & Daryl,

Did you hear about US23 in Green Oaks Township last Saturday morning? Wow!

My wife and I drove through there at about 8:20 AM. The sun was up, the sky was blue, the pavement was clear of snow and little dark, 4 degrees outside and everybody was going 70+. Then I noticed a county truck dumping salt like his life depended on it.

To be honest, I thought it was a little out of place. But I slowed a little, increased the safe distance between my bumper and that of the lead foot in front of me. Then the traffic started to slow, red tail lights were everywhere. Way up in the distance we could see about a dozen vehicles in the median and too many emergency and tow vehicles to count. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

While I was parked in the hammer lane, I opened my door and set my foot on the pavement. There was a 1/4 inch of ice on the road and it was covered in water. Funny thing was, when I stopped the van, I didn't detect any skidding. Even the ABS brakes stayed quiet. Never the less, walking on that road surface would have been real hard to do. Skating would have been easier. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

As it turned out, the dark pavement and bright sun was combining to melt the snow and black ice that had formed during the night. The road was basically ok until sudden directional changes were made. I suppose breaking hard is what started it all. But my van didn't seem to have any trouble.

I'll put an X in the "got lucky" column. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It is hard for us New Englanders to understand that 70+ is legal in Michigan when most of our roads are either 55 or 65 max. When I was out there two summers ago, I had a hard time keeping up with the traffic because the road that was posted at 75, people were going 85..... If I was 40 years younger, I probably would have been passing them instead. When we get older, everything slows, including our driving speed.... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Some people get their first 4wd vehicle, and can accelerate like crazy.. but they forget that *everybody* has four wheel brakes! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Their advantage disappears when it comes time to stop or turn. Dealers should perhaps lecture 4wd buyers about this.. might save a lot of lives..

I find flat land fascinating because you folks actually have a horizon that seems to stretch on forever! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Here in Vermont I can only see as far as the next hill unless I climb to the top of Mansfield or Camel's Hump.

When we drove to the Finger Lakes region a couple of years ago for the TBN Meet my wife and I spent hours staring at the distant horizon. It was a real treat! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Pete:

A favorite saying of people from surrounding states about Michigan is that "the only hills in Michigan are the off ramps for the freeways"

Not true. We do have lumps here and there. Just try Sherman Hill in the winter.

The only "stupid" or should I say inattentive truck drivers I see are "door slammers" /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I was on I96 eastbound this morning between Wyoming and Schaefer. A lady in a suv loaded with people tried to pass me in the hammer lane. Needless to say, the lane was slushy to say the least. She got in the slush, the suv wiggled a bit, she panicked and stabbed the brake. Just as I cleared her with the back of my trailer, she shot to the right across 4 lanes and hit the wall. Then she shot back across 4 lanes and hit the median barrier. I went back the same way after unloading at my customer. The State Police as well as a roll off wrecker was there loading the suv. It was wiped out. I think the occupants were too. That one didn't go to the bump shop, it went to the bone yard. Tomorrow....same forecast.

Just another morning in the Motor City. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey Daryl; What was the chances that the tags on that suv were buckeye. Long live MICHIGAN, best in the midwest. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The only hill I have on my property was formed by the 500 yards of excavated material that was dug out in my backyard for a new foundation. I leveled the top off and now it's my ATV climbing hill. Many people seem to think flat areas are boring and that may be true but it sure makes for good farmland.

Back to the subject, it has been snowing non stop since early this morning and so far almost nine inches have come down.
With a temperature of 20 degrees and a gusting wind I feel sorry for the poor folks working outdoors today. I was out on my ATV plowing for hours this afternoon, but when the piles get two feet deep it runs out of traction. Tomorrow I can finally see how my JD works in deep snow. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This type of driver isn't particular to MI for sure. The ditches up here are standing room only for the first couple of snows. Then most folks figure out - again- that snow is slick.
