Deere already has the 4100, the 41x0 to battle the BX's, and now it i adding in the new x400 and x500 for those who do nott need all the stuff on the BXs but want it close enough with better trade in value.

Not to dis anyone but saying something over and over does not make it true, Kubota actually has the better resale in the sub 50 horse UT market. JD does have a better position in the LT and GT market and perhaps in the really big stuff which I know nothing about. I went to a farm auction and the Kubotas brought a lot more activity--what few there where than similar JD's. Anyway, this resale thing is a non issue and perhaps even a urban legend or JD dealer fabrication like not being able to get parts for Kubota--well dang, come to think of it I have never needed any parts for it. Best to all for Christmas season. J

Tres,
It's not urban legend JD has the best resale value of any tractor. Anyway that's according to the people that do the stats., I believe it's jd power and associates. There have also been a few other articles that I've read about this as well. Around here kubota's don't sell for near what a jd will bring. I think it really depends on where you are.

Richard,

I'd agree with the last part of your note that it really depends on the area. Thus in our area it IS an urban legend that JD has better resale. In our area there is zero doubt that used Kubotas are more desireable (in the compact area) and sell faster and for a greater % of the original value.

The bottom line for me is this: They are BOTH great tractors so get the one that is substantially cheaper. If you need to sell it for any reason you're guaranteed a very decent portion of your investment back!! Good news all around!

Knight,
What is the basis that kubota's sell better where you are at besides your say-so? I'm not saying that to be a smart-aleck but I'm sure the guys who have john deere in your area say the same thing about their john deere's. The truth is you don't know how well they sell and neither do I in my area. I may see one john deere sell high at a farm sell and kubota sell low but that doesn't mean that that is necessarily the way that it is. I think we have to rely on the number crunchers for any kind of a meaningful representation. Then again it all depends on the model as well. You can have a jd tractor like say a 4020 that sells for more than it cost new or you can trade in a 4600 like mine at half it's original cost. I can't even say for sure either as all I can tell you is the reports that I have seen. I don't remember the exact places even so again it's a crap shoot there as well. Basically what we're doing here is stating personal opinion. I hope someone like John or whoever will find the articles and post them.

So since you say that JD has an advantage in the LT and GT market, then my comment about better resale still holds. Also the info I relayed is from dealers that I have spaken with who sell both in some cases and in one case a lot of Kubota.

No I am not dissed by you Tres. you are a good guy! you helped me with your advice and I really like your posts!

Nuru, I am happy for you that you have a great new 4100. I know you will be pleased with it. I also hope you do not have to worry about resale--good or bad for many enjoyable years. When it comes time to look at a bigger tractor I certainly will look at JD offereings-- fairly--who knows what could happen. I also really do hope JD remains viable and competitive--it is in all of our interest even those of us who do not have a JD. If there was ever a company that has the guts to make a comeback it is JD. About JD resale value.

When I bought my JD4100, I traded in a 1988 JD 240 Lawn and Garden Tractor. Basically a glorified riding lawn mower.

It had a 14 horse Kawasaki engine that just wouldn't quit. After 13 years of mowing, pulling, hauling, and joy riding, it was time for retirement. When I made my final decision on the JD 4100 (yes, I looked at Orange and Blue - no real price difference in my case), the ol' workhorse was traded in. In 1988, I paid around $3400 for it. When I traded it in, I got $1250. No too shabby after 13 years of hard use.

Did I get a good deal - yes. The dealer tried to sell it for around $1450 and had no takers. He put it up for auction about 3 months later. How I found this out was that I went to the auction to see what implements I might be able to pick up before purchasing new. As I was walking around, I noticed my JD 240. I would have like to see what it went for, but had other things to attend to.

Everyone I have ever talked to about tractors mentioned the resale value of a JD. Too be honest, that is one of the reasons I bought one. It's like buying a Mercedes or an Acura. If they're well taken care of and in good shape, the trade in and resale value are high. Simply put, the market bears witness to this fact.
