More Weekend MOWING Tragedy

My user manual says if you have a two posts ROPS, don't use the seat belt. If you have a four posts ROPS however, do use the seat belt.

That sounds weird ? Is it only for certain situations ?

“Where vertical clearance does not allow for a ROPS to be in the raised (active) position, the ROPS may be temporarily placed in the lowered (inactive) position. Also, workers should not wear a seat belt while operating a riding mower with the ROPS in the lowered position. Return the ROPS to the raised position as soon as the riding mower is in an area where the vertical clearance allows its use and reconnect the seat belt.”

Possibly if the ROPS is not acting like a ROPS, all bets are off and you may have to try to leap t0 safety?

People talk about trying to leap to safety, in a rollover there isn't time to do that and even if there was, the likelihood of snagging something on a lever is pretty high.
I've rolled over a couple of lawn mowers and was able to push them off or roll out from under them, but there's a big difference between a lawn mower and even a BX series Kubota.

The thing about rollovers is they often start in slow motion so you think that you have plenty of time to jump free. Once it reaches a certain point though, it goes to the ground fast and hard.

Like you I had one lawn mower rollover and the mower landed on me for the most part, but I was able to shove it off of me, (adrenaline rush?) I was not hurt. But like you said, I doubt I could throw a BX off of me, and that was many years ago, when I was much younger and stronger.

Agreed. There wasn't time to do anything.

I'm kinda forced to wear my seat belt every time I use my PT425. It sits so low to the ground that if the seat belt is not on, it will get run over by the left tires if I drive forward OR backward. So it's become a habit that I cannot (and don't want to) break. It's just 2nd nature. Hop on the seat. Buckle the belt. Lower the arm rests and off I go.

LOL, that's because I'm full of you know what. This is what the manual actually says:

"Always use seat belt when the tractor is equipped with a ROPS and CAB. Never use the seat belt when tractor is not equipped with a ROPS and CAB"

So it's when there is NO ROPS that you shouldn't wear a seatbelt.

What a shame :( hope driver of SUV get heavy hand law upon him.
This is Canada. The heavy hand of the law only applies to people stealing from the government. There's a caveat - if you are a politician, then it's all good. You get to retire on full pension tax free.

BTW The SUV driver stole it
