Snipe hunting is a popular passtime here in Michigan as well. Whenever we have Boy Scout District or Council camp-o-rees in southern Michigan, the Order of the Arrow guys will put a bounty on the ever elusive "blue-billed" snipe. In northern Michigan the "yellow-tailed" snipe is known to lurk in the woods. Both are very rare, very clever, and tough to even catch a glimpse of. I've seen new Scouts out wandering the "known" snipe nesting areas for hours trying to snag one. Also, anybody ever used a smoke bender?

My first introduction to snipe hunting came from a couple of Disney adventure lads named "Spin and Marty". Anybody remember them? Or am I just dating myself again?

Years later, when I was called upon myself to participate in a "real" snipe hunt, I was able to amaze the instigators by actually catching one! The thing struggled so much that I felt sorry for it, so I let it go. All I had to show for it in the end was an empty gunny sack with a bit of leaves, dirt and a small tuft of fur. I wish I had my digital camera back then -- the expressions on their faces were definitely a Kodak moment. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Back when I was in the Boy Scouts it was a standard summer camp ritual to send the newest Scouts down to the Quartermasters cabin to fetch 50' of shoreline and a left handed smoke-shifter./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Never saw any of them come back with anything but a depressed look on their faces though.
