I was talking with one of the old farmers in our area after church yesterday. He said, and I quote: "Old Man Winter's back is broken. Maybe a little more snow and cold, but we're through the worst of it. Seen it before and bad December storms mean an early spring". I'd sure like to believe him and think some better weather is coming for the Great Lakes area. The ground hogs seemed to be confused about things as two different ground hogs had two different predictions. Any other weather prognosticators out there have any insights?

Bob

Don't you find the whole groundhog theory to be confusing? If a groudhog sees his shadow it means MORE winter. Seems to me it should mean LESS winter cause the only way he can see his shadow is if the Sun is shining. A shining Sun is associated with good weather not bad!

Weatherwise things always average out. In my opinion since December was such a bear it's more likely that there will be an early Spring. Also I hear a bird this morning chirping in the woods. Don't know the species but it's chirp is only heard around here (southern IN.) in early Spring. Probably take the bird a few weeks to reach the Great Lakes area.

I don't have any better guess than anyone else, Bob, but I sure hope he was right. I noticed this morning that my plum trees are budding. In fact, the buds have started opening. Two of the last six years, we've had a late freeze and no plums./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Old woodsmen told me about snow fleas.
Toward the mid of Febuary if one notice snow fleas on the snow than it will be an early spring.

That's about right, Al. I made up a calendar from The Old Farmer's Almanac late last Fall, and planned to plant onions, beets, radishes, turnips, and potatoes this week, and broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower late next week. However, it's just staying wet, misty, foggy, 100% humidity, even though I only got .16" of rain yesterday and .06" today. With everything saturated, I'd need at least 4 or 5 days of sun to dry it out enough to till now, and the forecast is that we won't see the sun for another week./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

bpence,My Father was an old farmer who always said the weather would never straighten up until after Easter.Seems like that Sunday is a little late this year,April 15th.He also swore that if it rained on Easter Sunday,it would rain the following seven Sundays.I've seen this come true more than once.Just looked at our extended forecast;Rain/Freezing rain and or Snow through Sunday anyway.

Ok, I give up. You have to explain what snow fleas are. I've never heard of them, but that doesn't mean much.
