Mosquito traps & MAD DEER DISEASE

Re: chronic wasting disease...

There have been some reports that three men died, possibly of a brain disease, and there was evidence that the three all participated in the same game feed years ago. Apparently this brain disease is a 1 in a million occurence, and the possibility of three people dying who associated with each other would make this extremely rare. So the wonderment of the possibility that some venison at the game feed was a CWD deer has surfaced.
If you want to read an article, albeit it is the media and not science, go to the site below which is a Milwaukee, WI newspaper and they have several CWD specific stories, which one includes the three men dying.

Re: chronic wasting disease... WNV

I searched on "Chronic" + "wasting" + "disease" and got many many hits, including: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/oa/wnv/index.html
Where I found some good West Nile Virus info as well.
Some of the high level info, below, for details go to the Gov site.

Just a side note. I was at the local Ace Hardware store today, and noticed a display of these mosquito systems. The price on it was $499.00. I mentioned to the manager that other systems were being advertised for as low as $299.00. He said that he knew that, but since a case of West Nile had just been discovered about 75 miles east of us, he was selling these things like hot cakes! /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif I made a comment to him about taking advantage of an uncomfortable situation, and he said what the heck, he's in business to make money. I said he wasn't going to make any money on me, and left without making my purchase.

Ah, capitalism! /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I must have missed something somewhere but do these things really work or do they just attract more mosquitos to the area? Will they work on 'New Hampshire's state bird', the black fly?
When they came out and cost $1000, I didn't even give them a thought. Now with the price down to $300, I'll at least look at them. Where does one get -permethrin-. I have read posts about it but have never seen it.

David,

Sorry, I can't help you. As I mentioned in my earlier reply, I really don't have a problem with mosquitos that the run of the mill "bug sprays" can't handle. I have no experience with those other products.

Sorry /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I bought the Coleman version, the Mosquito Deleeto for $200 at Target. It uses propane and a scent lure. It is worthless. It is going back tommorrow.

Dave,

Agway handles permethrin by the quart 13.3% is $48. Friend of mine bought the Mos Magnet - smaller version after his neighbor bought three of the big ones for their 2 acre plot.

He is returning his as it seemed to work for a while then the mosquitos had a big hatch here a few weeks ago it couldn't keep up (he has a 1/2 acre backing up to woods).

The town here sprays for them (just along the road), as well I do too every 8-10 days with a stihl fogger and permethrin - one quart is good for 4 treatments or about 40-45 days on 2 acres of area sprayed. If you go this route get a respirator too. The total setup is $600 and the blower is great for fall cleanup as well.

This does not eliminate them but you can be outside in the daytime without getting carried away. Without treatment we can't even walk in the yard in the daytime unless coated with deet.
