Mosquitoes, good method to get rid of them?

Mosquitoes breed in the smallest amount of stagnant water,, I can not convince my neighbor,,

come to my house, almost no mosquitoes,, go to his house 400 yards away,, the mosquitoes will carry you away,,

the difference is stagnant water,,
he has leaves in gutters, several bags of aluminum cans waiting to go to recycling, and other stuff laying around catching rain water.

GET RID OF THE WATER,,,,,, PERIOD.

I had a business in another town one time, you could not work there in the evenings with the door open,,
mosquitoes,,

It turned out that there was an equipment dealer about 100 yards away,, they had some used tractor tires setting in their back lot.
The dealer folded,, the place was cleaned of stuff sitting around,,

Guess what,, ?? no more mosquitoes,,,

Best thing is mosquito Dunks or Bits. We have some low areas along the trails we hike every day. Early in the season, I bought about a dozen or so Dunks and threw them in those low areas that would often hold water after rains. Have not had any this summer. Had some get into one of my rain barrels. Put a few Bits (just chopped up Dunks) in it. Killed them.

I use Nyguard IGR. 3ml/gallon and the Talastar P is 1oz/gallon. After the first application I treat again in two weeks after that every month. I apply about 5 or 6oz per minute.

people should be required to either get rid of stagnant water, or have it properly treated to prevent mosquitoes. what's the sense in allowing mosquitoes to breed?. I know, either laziness or Terrorists!..
Just now catching up on this thread and I see several comments about getting rid of standing water. It's important! Don't forget what mosquitoes carry with them: diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, etc. and while we don't have the diseases now, we do have the carrier so it wouldn't take much to get the disease re-introduced.

Bats.
Lots of bats.

The deck that rings the second floor of our house has a cosmetic 2x12 which is about an inch or so past most of the other wood on the house, makes an ideal nesting area for bats, and every evening at dusk a couple hundred bats come zooming out. Despite the meadow adjacent to our property basically being a wetland half the year, and the numerous local ponds, we can be out and about without repellent and only encounter the occasional mosquito.

A zillion frogs helps, too, as do dragonflies, but I don't know how to encourage them, they just spontaneously generate around here.
I looked into getting mosquito fish for our pond and a guy looked at the pond water and said "they'd die in here, nothing for them to eat".

Bats, frogs and dragonflies eat lots of mosquitos. A stocking of bream and sun perch in the creek will take care of the larvae also. If the standing water is deep enough the fish can get into that area also. You may have to restock each spring after the high water recedes from spring time rains. They also are quite tasty when fried. It is amazing how many can live in a small creek. I have creeks and ponds surrounding my house and rarely have a mosquito at my house, but I have lots of frogs and bream in the creeks and ponds plus a few bats fly around at night.

I can't do anything about 90% of the standing water, I do have some things that need cleared out but not much standing water that isn't in tall grass that I can't cut :). One of these years I'll figure out a way to get the high water areas mowed before the reed canary grass goes to seed but that is going to require something light with a lot of surface area on tires and a mow height of near a foot most likely... need to get a two blade riding mower deck, a 12hp riding mower engine and make a tow behind for the 4 wheeler basically with riding mower rear tires for gauge wheels.

The creek I don't believe moves enough to support fish, there are a lot of frogs, there's a BUNCH of tiny ones about the size of a quarter or smaller this year for whatever reason

I'll read through this more thoroughly later and see what I can do

I'm in South Mississippi, and I started using Spartan Mosquito a couple of years ago. It works great at my place. I have four out now, and it keeps about 2-3 acres around the house free from mosquitoes. Two years ago they were so bad they'd pick me up off the tractor and drag me into the woods. Then I heard a radio ad about this product (made right here in So. MS), and tried it. Within about a month, I didn't see another mosquito for the rest of the summer. I've used it since, and it seems to work well.
