Mosquitoes, good method to get rid of them?

I'm in South Mississippi, and I started using Spartan Mosquito a couple of years ago. It works great at my place. I have four out now, and it keeps about 2-3 acres around the house free from mosquitoes. Two years ago they were so bad they'd pick me up off the tractor and drag me into the woods. Then I heard a radio ad about this product (made right here in So. MS), and tried it. Within about a month, I didn't see another mosquito for the rest of the summer. I've used it since, and it seems to work well.

So you have a small puddle or pond and want to get rid of the mosquitos. What we use to do would get you in trouble now. So there is a modified procedure that should be OK.

Take a glass Coke bottle - half full of diesel fuel - tightly wrap a shop rag and jam into the Coke bottle - clear to the bottom. Throw it out into the puddle/pond. The shop rag will wick diesel fuel to the surface of the water - the mosquito larva will suffocate - lack of oxygen.

Now a days this will get you in trouble. SO.... use olive oil as a substitute for diesel fuel. Works just as well - environmentally friendly.

Then there is liquid DDT - - but we shant even discuss that option.

Buzz off: breakthrough technique eradicates mosquitoes

Bats, bluebirds and tree and barn swallows. Let the birds nest near your home/patio area. If that's not eliminating them, the propane fogger is excellent for a couple of days, but the birds will move on to where the bugs are.

The first few years after purchasing our property and clearing it, we had an outrageous amount of mosquitoes. We located every place that held still water and eliminated the standing water. The hardest is a cypress pond which the beavers dam up constantly and the water will stop flowing. It held about 6 inches of water near our house so we removed the beaver dam and the water flowed and it reduced our mosquitoes by about 90%. It is now more normal mosquito population around here. We rarely get bit.

people should be required to either get rid of stagnant water, or have it properly treated to prevent mosquitoes. what's the sense in allowing mosquitoes to breed?. I know, either laziness or Terrorists!..

One of the most common sources of mosquitoes in rural areas is discarded tires. They collect rainwater and are a perfect breeding ground. Natural stagnant water usually has enough fish or frogs to eat the larvae.

You could have left the beavers alone and just added a bunch of guppies to the water when water temp reached 55 degrees in the spring.

Another place mosquitoes lay their eggs is inside older corrugated culverts where the corrugations hold water and it's slow to evaporate even in dry weather...
