Mark02tj - yes, my IP has been Hughes Net for the last five years or so. And again, Yes, since hughes net went to Gen 4 the system is supposed to be able to handle VOIP. I'm VERY pleased with the speed and accuracy of Gen 4. Prior to hughes net I had Starband and at my location Starband was very affected by changing weather. I have no desire to improve my phone service. Internet email is more than adequate.

Google's Voip is free. But I would question how well it would work over the satelite due to latency.. It would not cost anything to try.

It,s called crappy infrastructure.These utilities (phone/power)don,t do much maintenance(tree trimming,upgrade cable) unless they are pressured to do so.Call your local public service commission office and fill a complaint.The said utility has 3 days to address your complaint.

I also have Hughes net Gen4 and also am very pleased.We had at@t with 2 lines coming in one for Phone one for Computer, Slower than 40wt Oil @ -50 below.We got rid of Landlines and went with Cell phones and Hughes net.:thumbsup:

We only have one Internet/phone provider and they are not good but not horrible either. Service has improved for us but we are still limited to 1.5 mb down which stinks to say the least. Cable runs on the road in front of us but the company will not bring service down our street even though the number of home serviced on that line is small. Go figure. If cell service did not have a bandwidth limit we would switch but we consume quite a bit of bandwidth.

There is a local wireless company that has brought in service to certain areas but they have to install a tower to provide a bubble of service. I have thought about talking to them but that would mean we would have to provide the space for the tower and worse, access. I have also heard some complaints about their service as well.

The utilities in my county do keep the lines clear. I see them trimming trees regularly. The only complaint I have is with a neighbor who has a forked tree over hanging the utility lines. One tree top blew out in a storm and took out power but the forking tree did not come down. One day it will and it is going to be ugly. I had hoped he would have cut down the forked tree when the power lines were down but he did not. So we all have to wait until his tree falls to take out the neighbor hoods power. Only a question of when...

The guy I originally talked to at Frontier was really helpful but "it's not my job to handle internet service issues" so he transferred me to that unit...I am very sure that Frontier's "Too bad, but so what" attitude is because they want to abandon landlines for Michigan rural residents...but despite all the queries I make, nobody can inform me of just how I am supposed to get Internet service WITHOUT the worthless landline I pay $80 a month for....as my GF and I are both deaf, we never make voice calls and are dependent upon the DSL router for the vast majority of our cell text and data service as well as internet access. I really hope that Hughes can give us decent service later this fall...

JD, some providers will sell you "dry DSL".. I don't know if frontier will or not. But having the dial tone and voice services on the line has nothing to do with making the DSL work..It will work just as well over a dry pair with nothing on it. Not all providers will do this but it would be worth it to ask if you can get thru to the right person.

Thanks...but Frontier will not do that...they say I HAVE to pay for the landline in order to get the DSL....landline cost with taxes is about $50 a month while the DSL with taxes adds another $31.

This is a direct quote from an email I got from Frontier: "Our landline fees are not usage based with the exception of long distance, and because you agreed to a 2 year contract we cannot make an exception in your case"

Yeah, they just don't want to let you off the hook for the $50. I understand that, but there is not a technical reason they couldn't do it, just company policy. The connections on the DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) are there and it is up to the technician that is making the connections if he wants to put dialtone/battery/ground. on the DSLAM or not. DSL works either way.. I doubt Frontier is doing that well anyway, or at least the landline division. All the rural phone companies are trying to make a living selling as much as they can. The days of universal phone service will come to a close some day.

JD, Hughes has three plans available for Gen4 I would recommend the middle plan,that is the one I have.the first plan didn't give you much download limit.

we have Frontier also, and it has had it's share of issues. The first 18 mos we had the dsl and landline
the telephone had a terrible bleedthru of the data and we never used the telephone. i finally called and
complained enough and they sent a tech out and after many days of chasing shadows around my house
the guy called and said he found a bad component at the "switch". once he changed that out our phone noises
went away and it works fine now.
i recently got a letter about upgrading up to 12 or 24 mb service. unfortunately our home is only eligible for
an upgrade from 3mg to 6 mg, and after a couple days they did get me upgraded and found a way to
lower my total bill. i think we gave up unlimited long distance, but not a problem since our mobile phones
work most of the time here and we can use them for long distance.
i find that you can end up with a customer service operator anywhere around the country, but when i get
a local person on the phone with a somewhat local number that's when i have somebody that knows what
they are talking about.

thinking back a couple years ago when we had time warner, all in 1 package, we bitched about the bills and service
back then. but, looking back it probably wasn't all that bad. at least "on demand" movie rental meant just that,
with Dish if we rent a move sometimes it isn't available to view for a couple hours, in which case we rent thru
amazon prime over the blue ray player (linked to the internet) for a dollar less and instant viewing.
