You can also hook on to it and drag it to try and bust it loose.

This is the best easiest option and if this don't work then nothing else will .

Better yet, remove the starter and use the ring gear to pry on against the starter opening in the block. Best leverage, only small motions, and no breaking crank bolts.
Jim

I've never done that with a tractor engine, but I can understand what you're saying. :)

Years ago, when I was working for the railroad, we would sometimes get a locomotive in that wouldn't crank because the starter would be hung up on a bad tooth on the flywheel. We would do as you said and take the starter off and use a bar to rotate the flywheel a few inches so the starter would catch a good tooth. Then we put the starter back on and cranked it up.

Of course the engine wasn't seized, but you could turn that big whopping diesel over a little at a time with a fair amount of ease.
As long as you can get a bite on the flywheel, that would be the best area for leverage IMO.

I have seen in the past, that rods can get bent using the pull/drag method, on ones that were stuck worse than thought.

Years ago, I took an old spark plug, removed the porcelaine and electrode. I brazed a 3/8" pipe sleeve to it, then reduced to 1/4", so as to screw in a male air hose connector. With the valve rockers loosened, or removed, connect to a portable air tank, or my small portable air compressor. This of course after filling the cylinder full of a penetrate concoction. Adding 100-125psi of air sure helped..!!

Sure you can pry, yank and tug. Something somewhere will give eventually.
You will be happier purchasing a gasket set.
After you take it apart and find all the rust and gunk jamming it stuck. You will be glad you cleaned it up.
Valves often stick. So now you keep heaving until a pushrods bends, a valve gets bent, a cam follower/cam lobe gets wiped. Or as previously stated a connecting rod gets bent.

A friend of mine freed up a stuck engine in a tractor by loading it on his trailer and chaining it loosely. After driving around in a field for a while, the chucking of the tractor back and forth in gear freed the engine. No massive strain to the crank or drive line components. Pulling the plugs, making sure the valves aren't stuck and using your favorite "Loose Juice" can't hurt either.

If it ran a couple years ago, and was not out in the weather... it should come free with just a mix of light oil and solvent in each cylinder several times a day for a couple days.

On level ground, with it in high gear, you can rock it back and forth by hand an often get them to break free with little strain on the internal components. Or you can put a old pto coupler on the pto stub and turn the engine by turning the stub. As others have said, just don't go after it too aggressively as you can cause more damage.
