Kubota BX2200
I'm due to change my motor oil soon on my BX2200. Owners manual calls for 10w-30 or 10w-40. Have only been able to find diesel rated 15w-40 name brand oils at my local "big box" store. Are these oils ok or should I stick with Kubota oil?? How about oil filters?? Will any name brand such as Fram be OK....Filter#s??? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif...Thanks

Rosey,

Seems like Kubota just has not updated their manuals to reflect what is available in the US market as far as oil goes.

Myself and others here use Shell Rotella 15w40 and I think I remember seeing something somewhere where Kubota said this is just fine.

I was at the dealer the other day and asked about this when I got me some filters. They put 15w40 in if they change the oil for my area.

SIR,
i bought my SHELL ROTELLA at WALMART. they also have the
synthetic oil at $12.85 a gallon, but i was told if you start to
use this, you cannot go back to the regular oil. has anyone
heard this? i just changed mine at the 50hour service, and
used the regular oil. but 10gallons of UDT,and a engine oil
filter was $106.00 at the KUBOTA dealer.

My BX22 has 10 hours on it...Is this what I have to look forward to? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

You can use the Shell Rotella T 15w-40 or the synthetic 5w-40. Either will be fine. You can also use Mobil Delvac. Despite what is preached here, according to Mobil, you can use Mobil 1 10w-40 in a light diesel engine.
That is a myth about not being able to switch back to a non synthetic oil if you use the Rotella syn. Of course, since it is alleged synthetics are more slippery as soon as you switch back to a non syn oil the advantage of having run synthetic will quickly be lost so thus you wasted your money. Oil threads always cause arm waving and general dissagreement /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. Many claim there is no benefit to synthetic oil /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif. Many of these same people will then tell you that you cannot use synthetic during break in because the rings will not seat because it is so slippery /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. Think about that /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif. Then it usually wanders off into a arguement about extended drain intervals and Amsoil vs Mobil 1 and everything else /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. Time and time again independent studies have shown Mobil 1 to be superior to virtually any other oil, most recently I read about a tests in MCN, Motorcycle Consumer News. Mobil 1 auto oil used in motorcycles retained more viscosity etc than any other oil tested (they did not test everything of course). Corvette, BMW and others come from the factory with Mobil 1. Harley Davidson now recommends a synthetic --theirs or Mobil 1. The thing is that a quality conventional oil like Shell Rotella or Delvac or Dello (Chevron) will perform well in the conditions most experience with their vehicles, tractors etc
Here is the good news, use the Shell or any quality name brand oil and change your oil and filter per the manual and you will be A-ok. I change my oil and filter every 50 hours in my tractors, 5000 miles in the cars and 2,000 on the bike, I run Mobil 1 in everyhting, I have been doing this since 1980 when I worked for a particular oil company. That oil company performed fleet tests on company vehicles as well as lab tests. Their oil was a conventional and it was at that time a fine oil, they came to the conclusion, however, that Mobil 1 was the superior oil to any tested. Of course, these results were not released to the public for obvious reasons. Oh, the Fram filter would be my last choice.
If you go with the Shell Synthetic Rotella 5w-40 you can use it in everyhting including your push mower, your cars and trucks and your BX, even your air compressor. If you go with the non syn 15w-40 it will be great in your BX and your Briggs pushmower but I would not use it in newer vehicles that specify 5w30.
Confused, you might wish to retreat to the oil thread forum under general topics /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. J

Some engine oils have combination API ratings. There will be an API 'starburst' on the bottle or can somewhere. The "Sx" designations are for gasoline engines and the "Cx-4" ratings are for diesel engines. I believe that they are up to SL for gasoline and CH-4 for diesel. any oil with the latest designation for the type engine will be fine to use. If you have a diesel engine and find an oil with the latest Cx-4 rating it will be fine to use in that engine.

I'll not get into whether one brand of oil is better than another because there are differences and I think it depends on you and what you expect from you're engine.

do what i do, go to the nearest NAPA dealer and get their brand of motor oil (diesel) and then have them cross refference the filter. it will be a WIX filter. save yourself a ton of $$$$ and will do no harm to your tractor.

Sorry to cause confusion about this but I use the 100 hour oil/filter change--not 50 hour as I stated--don't know why I said that--I guess cuz I run a 50 hour interval in some of my small engine equipment. I keep a log book so I can keep up with everything. It is just a spiral notebook which has everything in it and the next scheduled maintence. If I just had one car and a tractor I would do it in my head but with my growing sparkplug count it is impossible as I have just prooven. Also, I just could not pass up the 1 gallon jugs of Shell Rotella Synthetic at less than 13 dollars from Wally World. Since my new bike is actually still on breakin oil and had planned to go to Mobil 1 as always but I may try the Rotella in it and with the oil change coming up on my 2410 and BX I may go with the Rotella there as well and all my small engines--why---because it is cheaper than Mobil 1 when you catch it on sale like now. I will keep Mobil 1 in the two Toyotas and that dangdable Jeep Liberty, they like it a lot. Pondering the mysteries of life and motor oil while drinking a nice Corona at 2 AM in the morning--what could be better. J, well oiled /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

You mean there's such a thing as a "nice" Corona? I do believe that's the worst tasting beer I ever tasted. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
