I believe that often times they will throw those oddball specs in their manual so that you have to buy their oddball spec'd oil. It is a way of working around the mangusun moss act which say's in very abbreviated format that the manufacturer cannot make you buy their stuff to keep up your warranty.

But if I give you a spec, and it just so happens that I am the only guy that sells something with that spec.... Where do you think you are going to buy your oil, and if you don't, and have a warranty claim, and I ask have you been running my oil, and you say "no" I used "this" then they got you because you used off-spec oil....

OK, I am cynical. Polaris is out there doing this now, although I cannot remember the spec that they were using.

According to my 2006-2007 Lubricants Industry Sourcebook there are over 200 lubricant manufacturers in the US. That's manufacturers and not packager/relabelers (hmm, relabelers, if that's even a word ). .

since lubricants is a broad category and motor oils would be a subcategory, would it be safe to assume that not all of those 200 lubricant manufacturers manufacture motor oil.

No, there are over 200 engine oil manufacturers. In total there are over 300 lubricant manufacturers and not all of them make engine oil.

KY Jelly. Guess it depends on what your lubricating. Don't think you will find a API or NGLI rating on the container any time soon though.
