Motor Trend truck of Year

When I bought my used Ford SD, I looked at all the big three. The resale value of the Ford's was the highest, followed by GM, then Dodge. There were lots of Dodge's out there with lots of miles and low prices but the seemed to depreciate much faster than GM or Ford. One year old Ford SD's barely drop in value. I had one non-Ford dealer try to sell me a used Ford for more than I could buy a new one.

I just use my trucks, my days of hot-rodding are long past. I just want a truck that works reliably and will be worth something when I go to get another one.

PBinWA, you must live in a unique and isolated area of the country. According to published reports from Edmunds, Kelly Blue Book, and NADA, your assertations do not quite match with what you can easily research and verify. For the model year 2004, the Ford Super Duty F350 and the Dodge Ram 3500 have virtually the exact same resale value, closely followed by the Chevrolet 3500. With the Ford and Dodge being a virtual dead heat according to the three largest vehicle price valuation publications, and the Chevrolet only one percent lower, your assertations simply do not match what is fact in the country as a whole. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I like Ford and Dodge trucks. Have used Toy's before; they were a good car, but they were not in the 2500/3500 class for hauling. Hence, I personally have a hard time calling them a truck. Maybe like the Aussies, I could say it is a "utility" or Ute.

I have an '01 Dodge. I'm almost at 70k miles. It has worked well. I felt it was more comfortable than the same setup in an '01 F250. I like the Cummins more, but could easily have another Ford(Had two F2504x4 gassers previous).

You've put some teasers out there, but please, tell me what is wrong with the shell on my truck? Is it bad, or is it a difference in your taste in styling?

fwiw, the initial baiting by 3 crows, I think the '05 Tacoma is probably a fine utility. The previous version were certianly comfortable, and built nicely.

Funny how that works. Diesel out here used to be at regular price, or +/- a few cents. Then everything went up. Gas has gone back down some lately, but diesel has stay higher(although it has dropped some).

Things change too. When I got my truck in '01, prices were more reasonable.

There is one other thing to factor in here too. This thread started on a gas powered Toy. But, the thread has moved to comparing diesels.

They Toy may get better mileage than my Cummins. My 4.11's has a bit to do with that...

Where the diesel value is made up though, is in camparison of similar trucks. I know, no matter what brand, equal trucks with only difference being a gas engine vs a diesel, the diesel will get better economy.

Diesel is pricier here too. But, I get 15-17mpg with moderate load. I know if I had the old V10, or a 360, I would get much less than that. My '89 F250 with a FI 351, 4.11's and manual tranny got 11mpg at best. Very comparable truck...

Robert, diesel at the USA station at Auburn/Folsom and Douglas is $1.93/gal, where are you at on price?

I drive a 1987 Toyota pickup to work everyday, it has 194,000 miles on it and still uses no oil and runs great. I too installed a flat bed because the bed rusted off. It isn't a truck in any sense of the word, it is a car with a small bed on the back to haul several hundred pounds. I have pulled a 4 X 8 trailer that I haul my lawnmower on and it does OK but that is stretching it to the limits. It won't haul firewood or pull a boat. I have a truck to do that with.

Just using what is outlined in my book. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Nevermind that the high octanes do nothing as many memebers on the Lexus forumes have stated.

To me shell oil is too high priced for a group 3. I spend an extra $4 to 5 dollars and go longer, way better add pkg etc.

Uh, Mike, I think he was referring to the "shell" of his truck, not Shell oil. I know, when anyone mentions a PowerStroke, it seems mandatory that they talk about Shell Rotella, but I think he was talking about the "shell" of his truck around his engine. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
