I want to welcome you as the newest member of "The Flail Mower Nation"

ALAMO is not the parent of The former Mott Mower Corporation which sadly no longer exists.

About your mower are you planning on selling it or using it?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOW:

The rear wheels are there to keep the mower level horizontally. The rear roller is it is still there prevents the mower from gouging the turf or nose diving and damaging the flail mower rotor or knives.

I hope the rear roller is still intact-if not you need one and bearings and possibly the bearing housings that bolt on
to the side weldments.

Check the rear wheel bearings, they will probably need to be replaced but it is an easy job. DO not buy sealed bearings for the rear wheels.

EDIT: I see the rear roller now and the rear rubber flap to knock down the clippings as they pass over the
flail mower rotor.

It needs a little work and a hot bath-yes a hot bath with the covers removed as there are grease fittings that are buried under rubber dust and grease.

if you buy the kevlar belts to replace the old ones they will last longer as they are more shock resistant.

If you could post more pictures of the flail mowers rotor that would be great for me to see-please use good lighting if possible when taking the pictures/images.

Your model is a Mott Interstater model with a finish cut rotor most likely.

You will need to drain the gearbox and put fresh gear oil in it.

Huh? Alamo bought Mott.

How would 2 wheels keep a flail mower more level "horizontally" than the full-length rear roller?

============================================================================

Alamo bought Mott Mower corporation after the son of the founder
who was going to succeed his father as the president of Mott Mower Corporation
was killed in an experimental air plane crash.

The Mower is made stable in two directions in both the X plane and the Y plane

Essentially: The X and Y planes occur on a piece of graph paper and are exactly 90 degrees apart in either positive or negative locations in relation to the center point which is zero on the number line.

It provides a more stable mowing height and reduces scalping to a minimum.

SOME flail mowers have four height gauge wheels-two in front and two in the rear which are cranked up or down to the desired mowing height relative to the rear rollers mowing height.

The Y plane is the point on a clock which is a direct vertical line from the 12 o'clock position to the six o'clock position from a positive number(+Y) at the top passing through zero to a negative number on on the Negative Y (-Y) portion of the graph
to the bottom.

The X plane is the point on a clock where there is a direct horizontal line from the nine o'clock position to the three o'clock position passing from negative numbers(-X) to positive numbers (+X)with the zero in the center if the number line is followed from left to right.

If you google "Mott K72" there is one listed for sale in Dryden Mi for $875. It has gauge wheels .... Is this over priced?

They were expensive new depends on condition. flailmaster has any parts you need took the rear wheels off of mine works fine without them.

So instead of getting a new Caroni would you suggest a used Mott K72? Even if I had to buy parts?

Can I switch knife types on the Mott?

It all depends on the condition of the Mott. Parts are available. The V belts and bearings are metric like all bearings and V belts and can be purchased from flailmaster or a good auto supply store.

The knive types are not ment to be interchanged.

Hi Rocky,
Having the wheels and the roller is a little redundant. However...If you have a front mounted Alamo flail like me, then the wheels come in handy. Any interest in selling the wheels?
Thanks.

Per the mott manuals the wheels are for when the ground you are mowing is full of obstacles like stumps that would otherwise bend a roller if it where to snag. the roller should be set all the way up out of the way when you use the gauge wheels so it is out of harms way. If the ground you are mowing is relatively clear just use the roller it works better in nice conditions. there were two types of wheels ones that hit the housing when you back up and ones that swivel 360 degrees without hitting the housings so be careful the first time you use it.

if you have a fine cut rotor you can interchange between pin on knives and the ring mounted knives but you can't put hammers on the fine cut rotor. You probably could find scoop knives that would fit would fit but be sure to get a knife that has a comparable length.

Just checked out the pics you have the 360 degree swivel wheels keep them they may come in handy (you can flip them up so they are out of the way when you are using the roller). take a few pics of the business end (the rotor underneath) and download a flailmaster catalog. It will enlighten you about all the different configurations of knives available.

congratulations looks like it is in good shape.
