Took a trip up into the mountains today and took the camera. Thought I would shoot a quick video for those in areas of the country that might not ever get to see stuff like this. This is driving up Berthoud Pass US highway 40 the top is 11,300 feet (not that high really) the road has been improved over the years from a two lane highway. If you live in or around mountains this is nothing new but for the flatlanders this might be something new. Driving up to Winter Park Colorado.

I've done my share of mountain driving from east to west and north to Alaska in the USA in cars, RVs, and motorcycles, including up Pikes Peak on an R80RT BMW motorcycle, but never been to Winter Park. Looks like some pretty country.

I had a nightmare on a mountainous road and now I just checked on the internet and know why. About 20 years ago we went on the Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. Wanting some pictures and being a little adventurous with a 23' mini-home we came to the beginning of this 11 mile one way road up to the top of some mountain. The signs said, no overly large vehicle allowed, so I thought this wasn't that big of a motor-home so me and my wife and two 8-10 year old kids headed up; After about a mile, I thought this was one big mistake. The road was a one way road going up with a 16 deg. grade and all gravel and had about 17 switchbacks. I had to stop at the switchbacks and back up so the rear end of the camper was over the drop off and then take off again. That was scary enough but then the 360 Dodge engine started spittering and sputtering because of the altitude. After a long, long ride and within sight of the top, we hit a nice flat plateau and could take a break. The wife was crying and screaming at me and the kids were under the seat crying so I had a real hoot of a time. Oh ya, and I was very worried. My wife started cooking dinner but nobody could eat a bite because of nerves. I noticed we had one long stretch that looked like a 25 Deg road to go to the top to go yet and was about a half mile long that cars were having trouble getting up.
I took the air cleaner off for more air to the engine and as soon as the road was clear I give it the gas. I floored it and was cruising up about 15 miles and hour really pulling and then a little car pulled in front of me that I didn' see before. I got on his bumper and started laying on the horn and he was able to get out of the way. I finally got to the top and barely made it over the last hump.
Needless to say, that was it for that day and I never got on picture. Not that I have the internet I can see how foolish that was, but I can remember that like no other trip I ever took.
