I hunted for meat when younger but lost the urge to kill. I never thought of hunting as a sport. We hunted to eat.
Hunted to eat AND enjoy being outside, added the fact that it took some skill, particularly with a bow. Never was a thrill killing. ALWAYS gave thanks for the sacrifice the animal made so that we could eat (along with the lines of praying and giving thanks for the food that is on your dinner table).
The reality is we all contribute to society to the killing of animals for mass food (meat). I live about an hour away from a Tyson chicken plant. Everytime I get behind a "chicken" truck I understand why some friends raise and kill their own chickens, and we've debated about doing it ourselves.
As mentioned, generally it's the hunters who are the biggest fans of conservation as they understand the value of the life and also don't take the "woods" for granted. That said, I've found like a variety of things, done a little differently out west as it's done here on the east coast just due to the "size" of scale per environment.
