Mounting a PTO hydraulic pump

   / Mounting a PTO hydraulic pump #31
I'm thinking about getting a PTO pump, Thought about making or modifying a pre-made tank and hang it off the 3pt hitch, anyone see a downside to this, also any links to an radiator (liquid to air) type hydraulic cooler, only found a few that use water to cool not air.

What are you trying to hydraulically power? If you use a cooler instead of a full size tank, you will still need to account for the hydraulic fluid expanding and contracting when heated and cooled.

I took it as he wanted to use a reservoir and a cooler.

I'd like to install 3-4 ft. "quick disconnects" hoses to my PTO pump. This way I can hang the pump then back up to my implements that have QD lines attached. Hopefully to make it easier to use rear attachments....sometimes it is hard to hang the pump with the backhoe in the way. What is a good SUCTION line, type, size, hose, QD ...etc to use? My pump is a 10gpm pump.
Thanks in advance for your ideas and comments.

I did this very thing when I made my upside down woodsplitter. I made a "carrier" that had the tank and fittings (plus my seat for my woodsplitter), and have never had any problems.

I have never had any issues with overheating, but I was not exactly working it to death just splitting firewood either.

If overheating was an issue, there are a lot of options. A person might weld on a few tabs and then bolt a fan onto the lower part of the tank and see if blowing air onto the tank would dissipate enough heat. Another option is to buy a transmission cooler and mount a fan behind it. The fan could be hydraulic, but I might just go with an electric fan and small generator as a test method. Find what works, then maybe go with a hydraulic fan motor and plumbing to make it go? Maybe just keep the electric fan and generator? Maybe a 12 volt fan hooked to the tractor battery? Maybe its own deep cycle battery? There are many ways to accomplish cooling.

Just keep in mind, you do not want to cool too much, otherwise you will get condensation in your oil.

I hung a regular engine coolant rad. on my combine to cool the hyd. oil. ---Robotic header control was killing the original combine system, so I mounted a rad. and also a engine fan on bearings behind the rad. to pull air thru. worked fine, was still on the combine when I sold it.
Space is going to be your problem child on this mounting and That heavy pump is going to take out your pto in short order. Micro tractors not designed to do regular tractor jobs.

I have never been a fan of pto mounted pumps they do work and some will work for quite awhile,
I much prefer a mounted pump or trailer unit with a pto shaft driving it.
I sheared a pto shaft off on an IH 574 with a mounted hydraulic pump,
that tractor had dual pto shafts so I was using an extension to hang the pump on to clear the other shaft,
it only cost me a couple of thousand to learn that I should have remounted that pump.

You actually make a very valid point.

I have had a few close calls with my PTO pump when it slipped off, or the chain did not cinch right.

I can get pto shafts on the lower end of the HP range for $150 which is pretty cheap considering. When I get to the point of hooking up my genset, I was going to have a machine shop make up a pto shaft for my 55 hp engine, so that I can pto shaft the generator to the engine. I will line it up as straight as I can of course, but pto shafts really do well at balancing, and adjustability.

This is the setup I use.....takes the place of the torsion bar and chain....very easy on and off, two pins holds everything in place. I use this pump for my backhoe attachment. I built in some "play" so the pump floats around with no axial/ radial restrictions.

Seems to work really good.....I need to paint it!!

You don't suppose the "extended shaft" had anything to do with that, do you???

I'm sure it did, if it didn't it sure didn't help.
Thats one problem with tractors that run dual shafts for 540 and 1000.
That said I have used the adapter extender on the 1000 to run 540 at reduced engine speed for many hours with pto shafts.
