Mounting a tire

One tip I havnt seen here is to use talcum powder on the tube to make it slippery so that it will seat easily within the tire. Baby powder works well. Also, slight inflation of the tube before doing the last bead makes the tubes position more predictable and makes it less likely to get caught in a pinch.

Larry, I've seen the talcum powder used on both car and bicycle tires; just never used it myself either because I didn't think of it, or because I didn't have any talcum powder handy at the time. But I don't think it's a bad idea at all.

Bird thanks for the info. I do not plan on mounting the tires myself. I just want to get them cleaned up before giving them to the guys that know what they are doing. I will try getting them apart cleaned up and painted but mask off the ring-rim contact areas.

Rob great pics , to comment on the first one on breaking the bead, I have used that method with a strong plank. butting against the tire and edge of the rim real close. like a ramp and drive up on it. sometimes the plank will barely rest on the rim and hold the vehicle from pushing th plank down. this is good, just wack it with a sledge and then the plank goes full force on the tire bead, and breaks.

Old heavily corroded wheels can be dangerous. Cleaning and painting will mask the problem but not make it safe.

I have tried to weld wheels that were used with tubeless tires. The wheel leaked. It turned out that it was so corroded away I couldn't reliably weld it and removed the wheel from service. Painting it might have sealed the leak but it woiuld have still been an accident waiting for an opportunity to happen.

I've heard of that to. The longer the tire on the rim...the harder it is to get off with rust and all.
