Moveable/Removeable Lights

   / Moveable/Removeable Lights #72
After studying every suggestion made in this thread, I opted for KiotiJohn's 2004 method and used the Harbor Freight welding magnet system. I had an extra lamp laying around so I've only mounted one, but it works just fine. I mounted mine on the bottom side of the ROPS as I have several low hanging branches on my property. I mounted a switch box on the back side of the SMV bracket.

Including the wirewrap material, rocker switch, switch box, fuze holder (I used the leads under the seat of the BX2350 but put another fuze between there and the rocker switch), and some connectors, I have less than $20 in it. I may upgrade to two lamps with trapezoidal light patterns vice the current single spot I have now.

The only down side to mounting the lights under the ROPS is the glare from the light. However, the light sure does warm the back of my head.

Thanks for the very useful thread.

I've read this thread with interest but I don't have a Harbor Freight around here so I guess the magnets aren't available anymore, at least on line. I did find a pretty good selection of almost identical magnets at one of the local Ace Hardware locations.

Did you try the welding shops?

As a follow up to my note about using the magnet mounting system for my ROPS lights (see reply #72 posted 3 Jan 07): Central Indiana recieved it's first snow Sunday morning so I was able to try my new light. The light worked as advertised/expected with only one negative. I light tended to move a bit when I dumped the bucket completely - especially as I tried to shake off some of the snow which had accumulated in the bucket. I reached up and adjusted the light and all was well. However, I may find a way to prevent this from happening again.

HF discon- the magnetic disc 30754-0VGA.

what else can we use?
Speakers have magnets in them. Might have to fab up the mount for the light, then use magnet to hold/stick in place.

For the glare, can you cover the bottom 1/4 or so of the lense. Some folks used to use tape on sealed beam headlights this way for driving in the fog, tape would be on top part of light (they would drive with high beam on).
You could block off with cardboard to see if it works, then mask off and paint or just use tape.

TLSmith85 & Others,

I too put together two HF welding magnet-removable lights (the 4" size) this weekend. Unfortunately, I found out that they are "too removeable." I was enjoying the extra lighting on Saturday evening while getting in some much needed bushhogging. The vibrations from the cutter, along with the forward/backwards motion of the tractor caused the magnets to work loose off the ROPS (on the topside). I tried three different light placement configurations, but they fell off each time after a short period of cutter use. Luckily, they never fell into/under the cutter.

FYI, the ROPS on my Case DX33 is ±3" square.

Back to the "drawing board." Zip ties, plus a utility knife in the toolbox may have to suffice. Also, anyone know the size & type of fuse for the 12v accessory plug (cigarette plug)? When the lights fell the 3rd time, they popped the fuse.
