I hope you do not tear out a side or corner weld on your loose materials
bucket as they are not ment for digging out broken stone or compacted materials.

Broken Limestone weights 97 pounds+ per cubic foot not including stone dust and it
has and expanded volume/bulking factor of 75-80 percent.

Rent a Toro Dingo with a bucket once and you will be better off as they are ment for this
work with their reinforced buckets.

I was taught to do it the way Moss indicates - post#9. Works well and puts no undo strain on anything.

Plus - I do have a heavy duty tooth bar on my bucket.

You just ram into a pile of gravel - something will bend or break.

To the OP, will a sub compact load and move #4's? Yes it will, my 1025R has moved everything from fine pea gravel ( #9's ) to rip rap, moved rocks that were as big as the bucket and dug holes the tractor could have been buried in all without a toothbar. The only damage to the bucket was paint, not bent, not dented, not twisted and certainly not broken.

When people tell you the loader will not dig, they simply are wrong. Some loaders are designed better than others and therefore dig easier but the point is a loader is built to dig. After a lifetime of operating construction and mining equipment I will tell you it is not a matter of brute force but a matter of knowing HOW to effectively to use the machine you have.

Someone previously nailed it with the comparison of putting your hand into a rock pile versus a finger. A toothbar will definitely help with the digging in. It won't turn it into a super digging machine, as it is limited by its weight, but it will be an improvement.

I opted for the Piranha toothbar for my B2650 and it greatly improved it's ability to dig into a pile. Again, still has its limits, but much better than the factory loader bucket edge. Would recommend.
