Up here in some parts of PA, it could be brushing tooth.

We got some folks west of here that think possum is “the other white meat”.
Thats not just a PA thing. There are folks around here with the same amount of teeth and a fondness of possums

I gots 3...

2 on the top and 1 on the bottom.

Easier to eat corn on the cob...
I got half of mine still. All my front teeth to the fangs, my upper right molars and lower left molars.

Makes chewing interesting.

I really need to go get partials

PA has been described by many as, "Philadelphia and Pittsburg, with Alabama in-between."

I'm not sure if that's unfair to PA, or unfair to Alabama, but it gets the point across.
What's Ohio's excuse????? (I have family in Ohio or from Ohio)

But it seems that the people I've worked with from Ohio seem to all have a lack of sense....

I brought up needing a board stretcher once while working for a fence company. My boss quickly shut me down and to not bring one up.

Come to find out, one of the other guys mentioned needing one when the dude from Ohio did the inch trick (marked on the wrong side of the inch mark) and cut the board short.

This dude had seen on, explained how it worked, and wouldn't let it go for a week

This is also the same guy who I zip tied his drive shaft and got punked at the speedy lube place instead of looking under his truck

Another dude i worked with from Ohio. Got his boot wet. Instead of swapping out both boots, he just switched out the wet boot for a dry one. Then spent the day walking around cockeyed since the boots had different tread sizes

Many years ago my cousin and i took our families camping at a nearby state park. Raccoons got into our coolers the first night, and watched one flip a garbage can lid off next morning.
We decided to trap a raccoon in one of those garbage cans. We sneaked over and slammed the garbage can lid on tight, trapping the coon.
A short time later here came the garbage truck. A man jumped off the rear of the truck, grabbed the can and pulled off the lid.
That mad coon came boiling out of the can and we thought the man was going to have a heart attack.
Well, it was funny at the time.

I'm guessing the reason why those two cities are used are not only because of population, but because people (from my own personal experience living in Pennsylvania) really don't know where anything is at on each side of the state (East / West).

You ask a local in NC where Asheville, Boone, Greensboro, Burlington, Hendersonville, Raleigh, Durham, Fayetteville, Greenville, Wilmington, Outer Banks, Emerald Isle or Cary is, there is a good chance everyone knows what area your talking about.

Go to Pa and ask a local where Washington, Erie, Reading, Scranton, Upper Darby, Abington, Altoona or Meadville is, there is a good chance people might get some of the cities/towns on their side of the state, but in general, most people on the East Side of Pa might know where Pittsburgh is and people on the West side of the state might know where Philly and Harrisburg are at, but after that, you'd be pushing your luck.

Even when I lived in central upstate NY, people in the state seemed to have a better comprehension of where cities and towns were in the entire state vs just one side vs the other side in the state.

I could be wrong, but I honestly think part of the issue in Pa is everyone who live in the East portion of the state generally goes to NJ Beaches for Vacation (or NY or NC LOL) and people in western portion of the state either go Ohio or NY for vacation. It doesn't seem like people who live in Pa ever travel to either side of the state for whatever reason.

My entire family lived in Eastern Pa off the boat in 1900's as coal miners, I graduated college from State college, worked both in Pittsburgh and Philly, so I consider myself somewhat familiar with the state, and only my own experiences. That said, knew NOTHING about Cedar Point (Ohio) or the lake Erie region until I moved to Western Pa, so I was just as bad. Took my one boy to the finger lake region in NY from NC, and for as much as I thought I knew where everything was at in Pa, it was the first time I ever drove through the Wellsboro area.

What's funny is I had to look because I would have bet NC's population is greater than PA's, but I was wrong.

Is anyone like “whatever happened with the coon”? 🤷‍♂️

Yep... at least half true. Most of the population is in the eastern end of the state, and very few of them every see any reason to head west for vacation, work, or anything else. Central PA is beautiful, but there is very little in the way of good jobs, money, or entertainment. A day trip to Hershey Park or sending their kids to Penn State University might be the only time many in the east have ever ventured into the middle of the state.

But to avoid going too far off topic, PA has a stable population of racoons, varying 0.5 to 1.6 coons per acre according to state statistics. And then there's this:

^^^^
When I was in 1st grade, a classmate's older brother brought their pet raccon in for show&tell, and walked it through the classroom on a leash. Of course at that age, it seemed like the coon was the size of a yearling black bear.

What I find interesting is that I automatically don't kill things on site just because they are on my property, but I'd like to think I'm smart enough to understand that you don't make wildlife pets.

At least in NC, you do need to apply for a license to "hold" wildlife.

When I lived in Conneaut Lake, PA (western side of the state) I'd go back to my parents and attend church on Sundays with them in Eastern PA on the weekends from time to time.

All the people at church asked me what I was doing with myself and where I lived.

I told them I was living in Conneaut Lake and working in Meadville. They all gave me a blank stare. I told them I was working about 35 miles south of Erie, and they would all give me a blank stare. I finally told them I was north of Pittsburgh and then they would finally get a general idea of where I was living.

It was just easier when I was working in Pittsburgh because at least every knew it was out west in PA.

Now in defense of the people on the east side of PA, that was probably a good 5 hour drive west driving from Conneaut lake driving to my parents, stopping for gas and a bite to eat.

Ironically enough when I worked in the Syracuse NY area, which was only 3 hours from my parents, but out of state, everyone seemed to know where Syracuse was. Go figure

In North Carolina, people living on the shore (east side) go to the mountains (west side) and people in the mountains (west side) go to the shore (east side) for vacations, so they get to know the area in general from the road signs traveling when they're traveling on I-40. Not a lot of people drive I-80 in Pa from one side to the other.

When I kayaked, still remember 81 south to 68 west into WV and all the towns in between LOL

Not a surprise. Meadville isn't even a gnat on the ass of the state, it has a population that is literally 520x smaller than the greater Philadelphia area. You'd have almost as much luck asking someone from Tokyo if they'd heard of some small random town in Wyoming.

I had almost commented previously, that of all the cities you had named in your prior post, I could point ot everyone of them on a map, except Meadville. :p

But Erie? I have trouble understanding how you can live in this state for any length of time and not know Erie, Johnstown, Pittsburg, Harrisburg, York, Scranton, Allentown, Bethlehem, and any one of the other many smaller cities that dot the state. Erie ain't exactly a booming metropolis, but a lot of history has happened there! It's also the only western "port" city, in this state.

Hey... if nothing else, everyone knows Lake Erie. My brother actually went to a small Christian college near Erie, and got married out there.

Nearby Johnstown is famous, or probably more accurately "infamous", for the many liquor taxes we have in this country. The city has had three major floods, the most catostrophic of which resulted in the state passing one of the first liquor taxes in this country, as a means of collecting the funds required for relief and rebuilding. This provided so much revenue to the state, that several other state legislatures subsequently copied Harrisburg's lead.

So next time you're spending $50 for a decent bottle of bourbon, or $80 for a decent bottle of Scotch, thank the residents of Johnstown, PA. :p

The northwest corner of the state surrounding Erie is affected by massive and nearly-constant lake effect snows. I guess the data is there if anyone cares to look, but I'd guess Johnstown might get even more than Erie, it's been known to sometimes snow there every day for 6 weeks straight.

... and just to keep this all on-topic:

Can someone just shoot the f'ng racoon?
Honestly, caught a couple of coon hunters and their dogs on my property without them asking me some years ago. Came across them sleeping in my bed at night and heard their dogs going off on my property.

I never talked to them, don't know who they were (my neighbor did ask me about the shooting that night) but they've never EVER been back.

This is the part of shut your pie hole up on how you keep people off your property.

YOU are more than welcome to come on my property at night hunting coons without asking me ;)

Have a range off your back porch with a couple of cans and some NV, you can always shoot at night. You can still hear the sonic crack though even with the can.
