Moving to the Farm

I forgot about their bees and quail when I was making my list. But we got both chicken tractors moved on Sunday, so they are in fresh grass.

Yum, good eggs.

I have thought about getting quail.

BIL used to raise quail in large numbers. They just got a couple dozen eggs and hatched them out so he can decide if he wants to get back into it. But Whiteoak snakes got over a quarter of the chicks right as they were hatching, then a few more the next week. But the ones left are laying now. When you are scrambling eggs for breakfast, it takes a lot less peacock eggs than quail eggs to fill you up.

Peacocks would be fun. Are they hard to keep?

They have a hard time in colder weather states. When we raised them we lost a lot of peachicks. The chicks are cute little buggers and whistle. The adults would roost in a large cedar tree. They would climb a nearby hill to fly straight over to the tree. The male long tail made flight a little difficult, but they did it. Flying down in the morning was no issue. The males had a need to dominate and sometimes kill the roosters out of the chicken flock.

Sister and BIL have some peacocks penned, but all the younger ones are loose on the yard. They also sleep in the trees. I took these pictures a couple three weeks ago.

We've had plenty of coyote activity around here lately so I found a couple who don't live far from here that trap. Had some activity, but didn't spring the trap. Hopefully soon. My dad saw one the other morning while hunting.

Are you going to save the pelt? I saw two young ones a couple hundred yards from the house when I came in from work early Sunday morning.

Got one today. Smaller female.

I hope you get your foot in one some day and suffer many hours accordingly, you deserve it. You should kill animals humanely and quickly.
