Just want to run a couple things by you as to reduce the shock effect when you go to purchase a calf.
550# calves currently are bringing $1200-1350 each. The lighter ones aren't that much cheaper and will take longer to get to slaughter size.
A 550# calf on an all grass diet will gain about a pound to pound and a half per day. Depending on grass quality. If you keep the calf 180 days that will make it a 730#-820# calf. An animal that size should yield at 50-60% of live weight once slaughtered. Smaller animals will yield a lower %.
Don't know about your area but here a good slaughterhouse is going to have a 3-6 month wait. The one I use is a year.

Thanks for the info, none of that is too surprising too me except the wait for the slaughterhouse. I know my brother in law has gotten some pigs butchered recently without long waits so I will have to check around and see. Thanks again.

I find myself using apps for forums more and more. And uploading pictures is especially important via app and phone internet because of the satellite home internet. Normally not a problem, but the last couple weeks it goes blank if I try to upload more than one per post.

My wife and the girls made applesauce tonight. There aren't many food items I like better than home made applesauce.
