Mow along the highway

Cutting with a rotary cutter along a highway is insane. ..............

Can;t agree with that. :D
Still need to use your head when doing it, but is similar to carrying a loaded gun.

...a 12-pound blade flew off a mowing deck and crashed into a Shelbiana resident's home Wednesday. Valerie Keene, 47, said the mower blade flew 500 feet before cutting through the outside wall of her house and an inside wall...

A loaded gun, or a loaded cannon?

I'm still thinking about the guy who found a dead pig along the road. Run over that with a flail mower & you would have pulled pork!

I just let the neighbor round bale our ditch, 3rd crop this year. Of course I mow the the driveway entrance next to the flower boxes.

I will mow it maybe once a year if it gets really bad. I do spray some roundup along the edges.

I know this is about mowing but...I live on a dirt road and the county hardly ever scrapes it. It gets pretty bad after some hard rains. In the past few years I have noticed more traffic, (from more people settling in) on our road. I have taken the box blade at times and smoothed out the real bad wash outs. But I do not do that anymore. It's the liability issue.

I have seen some bad accidents from people driving way too fast on this road. Leaving it rough slows most of them down...(except the kids and their trucks). I would be afraid of a lawsuit if an accident happened and someone said that I had been out working on or along the road.

Same goes for mowing and grass in the road, etc. Times have changed...I am still the same person...just a little more hesitant nowdays.

Isn't it a cryin' shame that we have to think that way. Honestly, this is not the America I remember growing up in. Don't get me wrong, I still love America and think it is one of the best countries in the world. But, I think the biggest problem is there are too many people trying to win the lottery. I'm not talking about the government run lottery but I'm talking about the lottery being run in the courts by unscrupulous lawyers and their clients. It's ruined a lot of our products (too many devices that manufacturers have to include just to avoid being sued) and it's hurting those of us who like to be good Samaritans.

Then let me rephrase it to this, "Mowing alongside a busy highway which has nonstop traffic (and no opportunity to stop the blades when an occasional vehicle passes by) with a rotary cutter (brush hog) is insane." This is beyond opinion. A flail is the only sane choice in such circumstances.

As for guns, I have no problem with the second amendment. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of fools who don't know how to handle them properly, and beyond that, don't even care. My next door neighbor was one of those. He took his youngest son hunting without teaching the boy anything at all about safety protocol. At the end of a day hunting, while the dad was standing in the open driver's door, the boy placed the high caliber rifle in the rack, and it went off, shooting the father right in the heart. The saddest part is what that boy will have to live with for the rest of his life.

If you are going to own a gun, take an NRA safety course. If you are going to cut along a highway, make sure that no projectile can be launched across the highway at a time when motorists are present.

I hear this all of the time, however I have never seen a flail mower in use. Along our highways, I see batwing cutters everywhere.

around here, all the mowers on the state tractors are flail mowers. typically one mounted on the side and one on the back. How they have the guts to mow on those steep inclines, i have no idea.

As posted earlier it's the same here. The only flail mowers I have ever seen were a few of the big ones to cut stalks.
