Mower blade problem

Got some new mower blades for the 60 deck on my BX. They aren稚 Gator blades but a copy I got on Amazon. They cut great but blow grass and dust every where. My deck has had the Kubota mulch kit since I first got it. When I mowed today I had to clean out the screen 4 times and blow the radiator out twice, and if I mowed over a dusty area dust flew every where.

I plan on dumping the new blades, I assume they are too high of a lift, unless someone has a great idea? It is to bad because the leave a great cut.

My 54" deck had the mulch kit installed from day one. I sometimes mowed non-lawn type material, so the mulch kit was a hinderance. I removed the kit, and then moving back to nice lawn, decided I didn't want or need the mulch kit, but kept the mulch blades installed. At one time, I built a metal plate to close off the discharge shoot as a quick/dirty mulch kit, but it tended to windrow grass and didn't work out well.

I have a thick, irrigated fescue lawn that I cut at 4". I don't mow when the lawn is wet, and the discharged grass deteriorates to nothing in short order.

I don't recall that dust/debris was an issue with the kit installed. How tall were you mowing? I could see if cutting it lower, more debris would be tossed about.

Might be worth a couple hours work to remove the mulch kit and see how you like the cut without the kit.

I hate to take the mulch setup off. I wore out the blades that came with the mulch kit I’ll probably just switch back to the blades that came with the deck originally. They only got used a few times.

I found that high lift are for side discharge and bagging. They don't mulch up grass... they want to cut it once or twice and then get rid of it (blow it out). Hence "high lift".

You need mulching blades or low lift blades to keep the clippings going up and down within the deck so they get blended up well.

The original blades are somewhat high lift blades meant for side discharge, which what the tractor came with from the factory.

Also, be careful of some of these homebrew "aftermarket" blades, if they are not balanced, they will wreck your bearings.

With that aside, I recommend getting Kubota mulching blades.

Only mowed a few times w/ them but so far I'm liking them. There seems to be less grass clippings than before. Can't comment on the dust issue as I don't have that issue here.

I thought I read that once you install a mulch kit you don't want to use gator mulch blades. I have the mulch kit on my bx2680 and f2690, both use the mulch blades recommended by kubota. They seem to work well.

I'm running these G6 Gators on my 54 inch standard deck, BX2380.

Here is the Gator G6 vs the factory Kubota blade. Yes more lift, they cut much better than the factory blade imo. Yes they will blow dust all over I simply back off the throttle when I'm going over bare/dusty area and throttle back up when I'm in the grass.

Note the tungsten coating for extended life.

I went back to the original blades that came with mine, the non mulch blades and it’s better but still bad. The radiator still plugs up a lot. I’ve ordered new Kubota mulch blades, hope they come in soon.

I made the same mistake with the high lift, super aggressive blades. I thought they would last longer and cut better, but all they did was make mowing misserable. I went back to the factory blades and life it good again. I also learned that the factory blades last just as long as the expensive after market ones do, so it was just a bad experiment on my part that I learned to never do again.

Used my used Woods 72" RFM last week for first time. I did some "field" cutting and one end blade is no longer engaging/turning/cutting. I haven't lifted deck yet with FEL to get a good look but any thoughts on what I'm going to find when I do? Looks like there are two blade bolts and I'm thinking/hoping just one has fell out.

I've been using the flat sand blades because I have lots of areas with leaves and sand and the dust was so bad I was having to wear goggles even with low lift blades. The flat blades don't cut as nice but they are very quiet and use less power than the lift blades, and they won't sandblast holes in your deck. Also their sharpened on both sides so when they get dull you just flip them over and since they dont pick up all the dirt and sand they stay sharp much longer. The other thing I like is that they dont blow much grass out the discharge chute, it mostly just drops out the bottom like a rear discharge so you can mow up close to flower beds and things from either side.

Some finish mowers use multiple belts unlike a lawnmower so it would be possible to break a belt and 2 blades still turn. More likely the bolt holding on that blade is loose.

I ordered and mounted Kubota mulching blades. 100% better.

For a recap I have the mulch kit on my 60 BX deck. The original mulch blades wore out and I tried some knockoff gator blades. It was like grass being thrown in my face and all over the tractor. Radiator plugged in 5 minutes.

I switched to the original non mulching blades. Better but still bad. Grass coated me from the knees down and the radiator took a little longer to plug.

The mulching blades are only a little different. Between the spindle and the blade tip they have a kick up that is a few inches long. Some engineer had his stuff together because that subtle difference is huge.

I always assumed mulching blades would lift more but opposite is true. The gator style blades gave a better cut but I am just not willing to give up the advantages of the mulching deck.

Thank you very much, I ordered them directly from Oregon for $56.53 shipped to NH. I installed them yesterday, had to removed the deck, so I cleaned it and liberally sprayed with the new WD40 Rust Repellant.

I mowed yesterday for the first time with the Oregon Gator blades yesterday on my BX2230 with the 54"MMM deck and I was very impressed by two thinks.

The quality of the cut of the lawn and the fact that the blade of grass is cleanly cute off, i.e., not jagged like the one year old factory flat blades.

I usually cut my acreage (1.5) lawn when it's bone dry, but may see how the blades perform when there is a slight NH morning dew.

I usually cut my acreage (1.5) lawn when it's bone dry, but may see how the blades perform when there is a slight NH morning dew.

Since I started using the Gator G6 blades my neighbor said my lawn looks like a golf course now. ;-)
