As far as fairway mowers are concerned, John deere makes a niece set of 7 and 8 foot finish flail mowers that have an excellent cut and leave you with nice turf and the rear roller stripes for you with no added machinery
There are several builders/ importers of front mounted flail mowers that work on the John Deere, Toro, and Jacobsen fairway units among others.
In my case and others the entire width of the flail mower is cutting at all times versus a rotary or disc mowers configuration.
With a rotary mower with an 48 inch width of cut only 24 inches of cutting edge is exposed at any time when mowing with the other 24 inches always following behind the first blades.
The rotor on our flail mower has 16 hangers per row with 32 Y blades
per row.
The 32 grass slicers in one row have a total of 48 inches of cutting edge per overlapping row, the four rows have a total of 172 inches of exposed cutting edge that slices the grass using the aerodynamics created by the Y blades when the flail mower rotor is at the proper speed for slicing grass
The flailmower has slightly over seven times the amount of slicing edge versus a rotary mowers 24 inches of cutting edge that is exposed and that it the reason it creates nice turf also as it slices the grass blade rather than tearing it.
The Y blades have a dual cutting edge which increases the available cutting edge surface to 344 inches of slicing edge.
Each finish flail knive slices cuts a tiny portion of the grass blade and the remaining rows finish by taking just a bit more of the grass blade until the desired turf hieght is achieved.
The the rotary finish mower over took the flail finish mowerfor general use and it is simpler to manufacture with a stamping press and plasma cutting torches and thinner weaker sheet steels.
My brother wanted to replace the deck on his John Deere 105 and they wanted almost $500 USD for the simple RAD made stamping and he refused to spend good money after bad for simple mowing as the deck did not hold up and the welds broke- you never have these kinds of issues with flail mowers and there is no worry about lopsided mowing from tires that are soft either.
Makita Inc. makes a very nice walk behind flailmower that is sold in England and Europe.
Flailmowers are a favorite mower across the pond because they are quieter and safer to use around pedestrians.
The noise regulations are more stringent in the E-8 than here and flailmowers are used because they are a safer mower strictly from the point of injuries reported with regard to rotary mowers.
Flail mowers work well in areas that are mowed there with lots of dense civilian traffic and lots of golf courses use them there due to the flailmowers ability to reslice any long grass that was left after it was mowed the first time.
Reslicing grass clippings is not something that can be accomplished with rotary mowers unless the grass is tinder dry.
