I'm trying to bring this mower back to life. It has been heavily neglected. The output shaft on the gearbox has about a quarter inch of wobble the bearings are clearly shot so i'm trying to get it disassembled.

I was expecting a large nut on the end of the shaft but instead found this. 1470799010713.jpg The small recessed allen bolts came out easily but i'm not sure if the center part turns...

Anyone seen this before?
Thanks.

Never seen anything like that on a bushhog. It appears that you have to remove the allen screws, then drive out the round keeper pin and then hopefully you can drop the blades from the shaft. Obviously you don't have a stump jumper on it which may be the reason for the oddball fastener.

I can't figure out how to explain/ask, but I'll try - perhaps the hub, consisting of the small collar around the shaft and the portion out to the parting line where the allen screws are, will unscrew from the main assembly (from the parting line out). I am guessing that this is the case because it looks like there is an alignment line punched in the "hub" where a 4th allen screw would go.

If this is the case, you should be able to tell by looking real close with a strong light down in the allen screw holes. If you look in there, is there evidence of threads?

That is a taper lock bushing. I can't post pictures very well, but if you will look up "taper lock pulley" on the internet you will see how the components fit together. You should be able to screw the set screw into the hole opposite the split in the bushing and it will push the blade down off the bushing. There appears to be a sleeve over the shaft that is pinned to the shaft, so you will then have to drive out the pin to completely free the shaft.

Seems like a Rube Golberg rig to me, but apparently it has worked a long time.

Here is how it is turning out. The device was indeed a taper lock. I drove out a pin and removed a collar on top of it. Split the taper lock with a screwdriver and it all came apart..pretty sure the bearing is shot... .1471229676632.jpg1471229806499.jpg1471229901479.jpg
