Mower on I95 hit by a tractor-trailer

Given how slow the tractor was moving and how fast the truck was going, I am pretty sure that section of I95 is 65 or 70 mph, the truck driver only had to be distracted for a second or two for the accident to happen.

Bad eyes? Show me a stretch of I95 you can't see a MINIMUM of 1/2 mile in MOST areas.

2500 Feet.

A vehicle at 65 is covering roughly 97 feet a second.

It takes about 26 seconds to go 1/2 mile.

That's no minor distraction.

My brother saw a young man being killed at roadwork, driven over by a dumptruck because he worked with a vibratory compactor and wore earplugs so he didnt hear the trucks backup alarm... It aint a pretty sight to remember, its tragic, and the last thing you'd want is other people judging over the nightmare you saw happening in front of your eyes....

I am wondering what the determination was as to the cause, the news site doesn't have any updates since 10/27. So much for news.

...I just have a hard time believing a truck driver can hit two marked vehicles...
If hitting the first truck damaged the front tire or whole steering system so that he basically was "along for the ride".... never mind...

Anyway, there was another accident east of Raleigh where one 18 wheeler for whatever reason stopped on Hwy64... and another 18 wheeler hit it from behind and never hit it's brakes... straight road, nothing to account for it... Never saw anything in the paper as a followup... as we might never hear about here, too.

When traffic accidents turn into homicide investigations, the public information dries up almost completely and immediately.

We have one of these (not at all tractor related) in my area now. Within a few days, it was announced that the investigation was going beyond a simple motor vehicle accident and even the parties involved are being told nothing at this point.

As having experience driving trucks it could have been alot of things. Steering tire blow out your along for the ride as yo uhave lost on of your brakes and the truck is traveling on that side of the blow out. Worse a drag link or other linkage broke on the steering. Driver heart attack or such. THeres not enough info there. I often drive a 72 Mack DM rolloff at work and top speed is 58 mph. I was driving on a 2 lane state aid road. I past a mower ahead sign and drove about 50 for 5 miles. I round a blind corner and directly around the corner was a TMA truck in the road and a a mower and broom tractor. I almost clipped the broom tractor. I stopped an d asked if they were ok. THe crew foreman told me the TMA driver was on the phone and had failed to stay around the curve.

Nobody has mentioned this part of the story

"All the witnesses that saw the collision continued traveling down the highway. We don't have a firsthand witness to the collision," Steffens said.

My wife and mother in law were next to someone who got tboned (not very hard) the other day. They stopped and told the cop what they saw. He thanked them profusely for having stopped and being willing to give a statement. He said that that makes his life MUCH easier when there is someone to verify the drivers stories.

Nope...not the case at all (since I reckon you were refering to me). I just have a hard time believing a truck driver can hit two marked vehicles (marked meaning the flasher arrow type lamps) before a third vehicle (the tractor) without taking evasive action to miss that second or third vehicle.
However, let's see how it plays out...

Google "target fixation".

Or just good old "driver inattention". Yesterday we had a "professional" driver clip the boom of a bucket truck as the man in the basket was working on a set of stop lights. Threw the guy from the basket, who was thankfully wearing a harness. He "walked" away with some broken ribs and probably a toasted set of BVDs.

Makes me so proud to be associated with commercial drivers of this mentality.
