p.t. 425
well guys it looks like the lil riding mower i bought for a 100.00 from the home depot is about to die on me so i guess its going to be a mower for the pt425 .question is mine has the higher torque wheel motors and i have some hills in the yard here . do you guys think the 60 '' will do ok or should i just get the 48 '' and live with a few extra passes .also how well does the 48'' rough cut do on grass as i dont have a golf turf here more weeds than grass actually /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif but it is what is .and which ever mower i decide on i have heard of some of you guys changing the wheels to solid tires to keep from rolling the tires of the rims or breaking the bead . where do you get the solid tires from . and one last question is there any adjustment on the deck and if not how tuff would it be to alter it do be adjustable . thanks for you answers in advance /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have the 60" deck on our older model 425. It works great. But, I do not have any hills. Yard is flat as a pancake. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

It cost $50 extra to have PowerTrac change out the wheels, but it was worth it in my opinion. I have 32 hrs on my PT425, most of it mowing, and I have not had any problems with the solid tires.

( and one last question is there any adjustment on the deck and if not how tuff would it be to alter it do be adjustable . ) There is an adjustment on the front wheels of the mower deck that only requires moving a pin on each side of the mower and moving spacers either up or down to raise or lower the deck front. For the back wheels, you have to take a bolt out on each side of the deck to raise or lower the back end of the mower.

I have, on my 1845s 6 foot roughcut mower, which sees far rougher conditions than you are likely to encounter with the 425. Here's what I went to - not solid tires - solid wheels. They are working out great so far.

I have a 422 with 48 inch mower and all hills for my lawn of about 5 acres, it takes about 3 hours to mow it and my lawn is a lot like yours weeds, different types of grasses and whatever else decides to grow there. Our lawn used to be a farm field and we just started mowing it and have kept mowing it. As far as the tires on the mower goes I have had a flat 3 times in 4 years of mowing and usually that was if I bumped into a solid object with a tire . I just put more air pressure in the tires on the mower and have had no problems lately, the only minus is the mower bounces a lot more. As far as size goes you will have to determine which is the best fit for your lawn, size, trees and shrubs, gates, etc.

I took my tires to the local outdoor equipment store. They sent them out to be filled. Based on what they told me, I'd guess that any store that services commercial lawn equipment will be able to fill the tires or will have a supplier who can.

My 72" rough cut came from PT with filled tires. They actually were filled tubes, inside the tires. They rolled off the rims and came apart during my second mowing season. The new ones don't have tubes, so the fill adheres to the wheels. I told PT what had happened, but I don't know if they've gone to a different process for theirs.

"also how well does the 48'' rough cut do on grass"

I don't know how the Pt-180 compares to your model when it comes to the brush cutter but I was not able to mow my grass with a 45" rough cut due to the grass buildup between the left front tire. The inside stem was torn off three times before I bought a 24 cent stem plug and have had no problems since.

So happy with the cut I no longer plan on getting a finishing deck.

As indicated, the height adjustment on the mower deck requires a couple of steps..but it's done in 5 mintutes. I'm still looking for my perfect height for my grass cutting on my 48" deck. I'm happy with the finish cut, although I wish the tire tracks weren't so noticeable. I do have some fairly steep grades and the 422 barely makes it up them, but with practice I can now keep my PTO running and still climb them all. As I have learned...and has been posted...the trick is to let off the treadle when climbing a steep grade...I come to a very slow crawl...but I make it! Thankfully the hills are not very long.
